The health service issued the warning on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/twitter\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"X, formerly TwitterLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">X, formerly Twitter<\/a>, urging those who think they may have contracted the condition to get tested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">According to the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs-scotland\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"NHSLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a>, lots of people have hepatitis C without realising it. If it remains untreated, the virus can damage the liver and could lead to life-threatening conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The NHS website says: &#8220;<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/health\/ukhsa-issues-warning-over-deadly-35636794\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Hepatitis C Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Hepatitis C <\/a>is a virus that can infect the liver. If left untreated, it can sometimes cause serious and potentially life-threatening damage to the liver over many years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;But with modern treatments, it&#8217;s usually possible to cure the infection, and most people with it will have a normal life expectancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;It&#8217;s estimated around 118,000 people in the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"UKLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">UK<\/a> had chronic hepatitis C in 2019. You can become infected with it if you come into contact with the blood of an infected person.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The virus is usually spread through blood-to-blood contact, according to the NHS.<\/p>\n<p>Content cannot be displayed without consent<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Some ways the infection can be spread include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">sharing unsterilised needles \u2013 particularly needles used to inject recreational drugs<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">sharing razors or toothbrushes<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">from a pregnant woman to her unborn baby<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">through unprotected sex \u2013 although this is very rare<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In the UK, most hepatitis C infections happen in people who inject drugs or have injected them in the past, and it&#8217;s estimated that around half of those who inject drugs have been infected with the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Hepatitis C is often symptomless until significant damage has been done, which is why testing is so important.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of hepatitis C<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_NHS.jpg\" alt=\"LONDON,ENGLAND - JUNE 6: In this studio shot illustration a NHS uniform close up, with stethoscope on June 6,2019 in London,England.\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Testing for hepatitis C is available on the NHS(Image: Peter Dazeley\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Hepatitis C often does not have any noticeable symptoms until the liver has been significantly damaged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This means many people have the infection without realising it, and when symptoms do occur, they can sometimes be mistaken for another condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Symptoms can include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/scottish-news\/number-scots-dying-flu-reaches-35060724\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"fluLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">flu<\/a>-like symptoms, such as muscle aches and a high temperature (fever)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">feeling tired all the time<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">loss of appetite<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">stomach ache<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">feeling and being sick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The only way to know for certain if these symptoms are caused by hepatitis C is to get tested, said the health service.<\/p>\n<p>Getting tested for hepatitis C<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The NHS says to seek medical advice if you have persistent symptoms of hepatitis C, or if there&#8217;s a risk you&#8217;re infected (even if you do not have any symptoms).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The health service&#8217;s website says: &#8220;A blood test can be carried out to see if you have the infection.
