While acknowledging that the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) is \u201cthe most sophisticated and far-reaching trade agreement which exists in the world,\u201d Berger argued both sides have \u201cnot used the potential \u2026 as it exists right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBetween our governments, between our chambers of commerce, we can do much more to strengthen the business-to-business ties,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
His comments put him at odds with the U.K. government\u2019s stance. Brexit minister Nick Thomas-Symonds has stressed that Britain has \u201ca mandate for a reset with the European Union,\u201d which states that \u201cwe will not rejoin the single market or the customs union.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Berger noted the focus between the U.K. and Germany should be on defense, due to Germany\u2019s Chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz\u2019s plan to unlock a \u20ac500 billion special fund for defense and infrastructure.<\/p>\n
