As a result, Liverpool Council said it would not sustain existing grants, in the region of \u00a350,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Since 2015, both libraries have been managed on behalf of the council by the charity. The city\u2019s deputy leader said last week how funding could be turned back on if part of the debt, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/council-says-pay-80000-debt-32214060\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"thought to be near \u00a3800,000, is repaidLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">thought to be near \u00a3800,000, is repaid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"ECHO Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">ECHO <\/a>spoke to users and staff at the site following a demonstration outside the library last week. Dozens gathered outside Dovecot Multi Activity Centre (MAC) to make their voices heard in support of the libraries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Users chanted \u201csave our library\u201d amid blustery conditions as Ian Byrne, Labour MP for Liverpool <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/west-derby\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">West Derby<\/a> and city councillors joined the demonstrators outside the library. A sign inside the library read: \u201cDue to the actions of Liverpool Council, the library may be forced to close within the coming weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Eileen O\u2019Shaughnessy was one of the demonstrators outside the MAC and has visited the centre since she was a child using the library. She said: \u201cFor one thing, it was somewhere to go and we used to enjoy it, and we used to have all kind of activities on as well which we used to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt was like our place to go where we could sit, read, do what we like. I\u2019ve moved now, I don\u2019t live in Dovecot anymore, I live in Old Swan, but I still come.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt\u2019s always been a big part of my life. Kids need books to read, don\u2019t they? I know that the older kids use computers and stuff like that, but you still need a library.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cMothers need to bring their children here, don\u2019t they? It\u2019s a place for them to come, they can read whatever you want, borrow what books, because some mothers can\u2019t afford to buy children books. And here, you can borrow them. And what do you think? A big part of it as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI think it would be a great loss. I really do think it\u2019d be a great loss, not only for the community, but for all the people that use it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754874797_581_0_IMG-20250805-WA0032.jpg\" alt=\"Inside Dovecot MAC\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Inside Dovecot MAC<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Jayne Webb is a librarian and receptionist at the Dovecot MAC. She said: \u201cIn my opinion, reading is the key to learning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201c2026 is going to be the year to encourage everybody to read. Are we going to help by shutting libraries? We do a bit of everything, this is an area that needs to be reinvested in and not facilities taken away from.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI can be a bit of a counsellor listening to people, so we do a lot more than just lend books. It is where people come for that sense of community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Former Lord Mayor, Cllr Richard Kemp, joined the campaigners at Dovecot MAC last week. He said the city council should \u201chold your hands up now and admit that what you are doing is Labour making a cut in cultural provision in two of the most poorly served communities in our city for access to cultural activities.\u201d He added how they could even go one further and \u201creverse these senseless cuts and work with Alt Valley to provide an even better range of services in two areas which are really cultural deserts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Speaking on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/bbc\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC<\/a> Radio Merseyside last week, Cllr Ruth Bennett, Liverpool Council deputy leader and cabinet member for finance, resources and transformation, said the city wasn\u2019t threatening to close any sites down, but wanted to recover alleged debts. She said: \u201cThe issue is with AVCT, we believe they owe us a substantial debt, across multiple services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cA lot of that debt relates to utilities that are owed on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/walton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Walton<\/a> Leisure Centre, and that\u2019s in excess of what we believe is \u00a3700,000. There\u2019s also a debt owed on the lease on Breck Road which we value at \u00a380,000.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754874798_276_0_IMG-20250805-WA0035.jpg\" alt=\"Demonstrators outside Dovecot MAC\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Demonstrators outside Dovecot MAC<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cNow we understand that\u2019s quite a substantial amount and we\u2019ve tried to work with AVCT for a number of years to agree repayment of those debts and what we\u2019ve said during the most recent discussions was, particularly in relation to the libraries, if that AVCT can agree to pay the repayment of the \u00a380,000 they owe us in relation to the libraries, then we continue with the grant funding. Over the recent months we\u2019ve had meetings with AVCT and officers from leisure and finance, we\u2019ve sent multiple emails inviting AVCT to come in and meet to discuss an affordable repayment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe\u2019ve offered them extensions to make that repayment but unfortunately nothing\u2019s been forthcoming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Barry Kushner, former <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/norris-green\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Norris Green<\/a> councillor and cabinet member, is business development manager at Alt Valley.
