{"id":334846,"date":"2025-08-11T04:29:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T04:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/334846\/"},"modified":"2025-08-11T04:29:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T04:29:17","slug":"prince-harry-may-try-again-to-help-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/334846\/","title":{"rendered":"Prince Harry may try again to help Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prince Harry is considering launching a new charity in Africa after walking away from Sentebale amid a row with its chair of trustees.<\/p>\n<p>The Duke of Sussex and his Sentebale co-founder, Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, both stepped down as patrons in March, after their relationship with the chair \u201cbroke down beyond repair\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, sources have suggested that both princes are keen to continue their work helping children and young people with HIV\/Aids in southern Africa. <\/p>\n<p>A source told the Mail on Sunday: \u201cThe duke is anxious that the fight against poverty and Aids in Lesotho and Botswana carries on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe and Prince Seeiso are keen to work together on a new venture. They are talking about setting up a new charity or clubbing together to support other existing charities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/prince-harry-sentebale-charity-meghan-mhfzrqk3f\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Inside the crisis that \u2018bled dry\u2019 Prince Harry\u2019s Sentebale charity<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">A spokesman for the Duke of \u00adSussex said: \u201cThe duke remains absolutely committed to continuing the work he started, supporting the children and young people of Lesotho and \u00adBotswana, nearly 20 years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cIn what form that support takes, no decisions have been made. All \u00adoptions remain on the table; whether that be starting a new charity or working to support pre-existing charities operating in the same sector in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Sentebale, which means \u201cforget-me-not\u201d, was co-founded by Harry and Seeiso in 2006 in honour of their mothers, helping about 78,000 children and young people a year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Until recently, more than 700 children with HIV headed to its state-of-the-art facilities for \u201clife-changing\u201d residential camps each year, although it is alleged the site has been \u201ceffectively mothballed\u201d in a funding crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The suggestion of a new charity follows a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/royal-family\/article\/prince-harry-news-sentebale-charity-bullying-96wst2q6q\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report by the Charity Commission<\/a> last Wednesday criticising \u201call parties to the dispute for allowing it to play out publicly\u201d and \u201cseverely impact\u201d the charity\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The princes stepped down after \u00addisagreeing with the chair of the board, Dr Sophie Chandauka, over the charity\u2019s fundraising strategy in the US and a \u00a3400,000 bill for consultancy fees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Chandauka <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/sophie-chandauka-sentebale-prince-harry-bullying-tb6v8d33s\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responded<\/a> by alleging bullying and misogynoir (misogyny towards black women) within the charity and accusing Harry of \u201charassment and bullying at scale\u201d by \u201cunleashing\u201d the Sussex PR machine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The Charity Commission, which cannot investigate individual claims of bullying, found no evidence of systemic bullying or harassment, including misogyny or misogynoir, but acknowledged \u201cthe strong perception of ill treatment\u201d felt by some involved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">This weekend, the Mail also reported that Harry had issued a formal complaint about Chandauka\u2019s conduct. A letter to the commission from his office accused her of \u201cpublicly recycl[ing]\u201d claims and \u201cleveraging the charity\u2019s public platform to do so\u201d.
