Domestically, the 6 billion franc project only squeaked through in a referendum with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/swiss-politics\/renewed-controversy-in-switzerland-over-us-fighter-jets-explained\/89609720\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">50.1 percent <\/a>support, a razor-thin margin for a major military procurement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then came the bad news. Last month, Washington <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/swiss-politics\/renewed-controversy-in-switzerland-over-us-fighter-jets-explained\/89609720\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">informed<\/a> Bern that the aircraft could end up costing more than 1 billion francs more than expected. And unlike other fixed-price European deals, the U.S. Foreign Military Sales framework offers no price guarantees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. only guarantees that buyers like Switzerland pay the same conditions as the U.S. military,\u201d Balthasar Gl\u00e4ttli, a lawmaker for the Swiss Greens, said in an email to POLITICO. \u201cBut those prices can still rise \u2014 especially now that imported components into the U.S. are being hit with tariffs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Switzerland\u2019s Greens party filed a formal motion in parliament earlier this year to cancel the F-35 order. The motion, submitted by Gl\u00e4ttli in March, argues that the United States has become an unreliable security partner and that Switzerland should instead consider a \u201csovereign alternative\u201d aligned with European partners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The tariff decision is adding to skepticism about the American fighters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe F-35 fighter jets have now become a political issue again,\u201d Hans-Peter Portmann, a liberal lawmaker from the same party as President Karin Keller-Sutter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blick.ch\/politik\/trumps-zollhammer-ruettelt-an-gewissheiten-sogar-fdp-politker-stellt-jetzt-f-35-kampfjet-infrage-id21104413.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Swiss media.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Switzerland opted in 2021 for the F-35s over France\u2019s Dassault Rafale, reportedly upsetting French President Emmanuel Macron.
