{"id":336576,"date":"2025-08-11T20:11:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T20:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/336576\/"},"modified":"2025-08-11T20:11:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T20:11:11","slug":"skyrora-becomes-1st-british-company-to-get-license-to-launch-from-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/336576\/","title":{"rendered":"Skyrora becomes 1st British company to get license to launch from the UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"f4131117-b9d2-4e9a-be3b-a16eb655db24\">Skyrora has become the first British company to secure a license to launch a rocket from the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has granted Scotland-based <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/skyrora-to-return-first-british-satellite-prospero-to-earth\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/skyrora-to-return-first-british-satellite-prospero-to-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skyrora<\/a> a license for up to 16 launches a year from SaxaVord Spaceport, located on the Shetland Islands off the coast of Scotland.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"f4131117-b9d2-4e9a-be3b-a16eb655db24-2\">It&#8217;s the first time a vertical launch licence has been granted to a U.K.-based company. It allows Skyrora to launch its suborbital Skylark L <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29295-rocket-history.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29295-rocket-history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rocket<\/a> from SaxaVord, which has already received a safety license from the CAA. The move is also a step toward Skyrora launching its larger orbital rocket, the Skylark XL.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"b1acc55a-7f4e-41c3-8fad-587e7ba138cb\">The licensing approval process considered factors such as safety, international obligations and environmental mitigations concerning Skyrora&#8217;s planned launches, according to the CAA.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Becoming the first homegrown company in the U.K. to receive a launch operator license is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone at Skyrora,&#8221; Volodymyr Levykin, CEO of Skyrora, said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/skyrora.com\/skyrora-secures-first-uk-launch-licence\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/skyrora.com\/skyrora-secures-first-uk-launch-licence\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is essential that the U.K. has sovereign launch capabilities \u2014 not only to unlock commercial activity for companies that need to access space and to help achieve the government&#8217;s objectives for becoming a global player in the space sector, but also from a strategic defence consideration,&#8221; Levykin continued.<\/p>\n<p>A first launch is not expected before the end of 2025, however. Levykin told <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/uk-grants-space-launch-licence-scottish-firm-2025-08-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/uk-grants-space-launch-licence-scottish-firm-2025-08-04\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> that, despite having acquired a launch license and having a rocket ready, &#8220;it is unlikely that Skyrora will be able to complete its launch from the U.K. this year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>He added that the company has options to launch from Australia, Oman and potentially Iceland, with Skyrora having made a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/skyrora-suborbital-rocket-launch-attempt-failure\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/skyrora-suborbital-rocket-launch-attempt-failure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failed launch attempt<\/a> from Iceland with the Skylark L back in 2022.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9f37065e-3f28-485b-a0d7-9a452bbadc45\">Skyrora is not the first company of any provenance to receive a vertical launch license from the U.K. CAA. Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) of Germany <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/uk-approves-1st-vertical-rocket-launch-from-saxavord-spaceport\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/uk-approves-1st-vertical-rocket-launch-from-saxavord-spaceport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received<\/a> an orbital launch license in January, allowing it to launch up to 10 times a year. A year ago, the company&#8217;s RFA One rocket <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-factory-augsburg-explosion-saxavord-spaceport\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-factory-augsburg-explosion-saxavord-spaceport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exploded<\/a> during a static-fire test at SaxaVord.<\/p>\n<p>RFA was one of five companies selected for the European Space Agency&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/earth\/esa-selects-5-rocket-companies-for-european-launcher-challenge\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/earth\/esa-selects-5-rocket-companies-for-european-launcher-challenge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Launcher Challenge<\/a>, which aims to foster independent access to space for the continent with small and medium-sized rockets.<\/p>\n<p>Skyrora was not among the selected firms, though its U.K. competitor, Orbex, was chosen.
