{"id":336864,"date":"2025-08-11T22:43:24","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T22:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/336864\/"},"modified":"2025-08-11T22:43:24","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T22:43:24","slug":"the-419-exhibition-by-inua-ellams-and-oluwamuyiwa-logor-logo-to-open-at-somerset-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/336864\/","title":{"rendered":"THE 419 Exhibition by Inua Ellams and Oluwamuyiwa \u201cLogor\u201d Logo to Open at Somerset House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fuel will present The 419, a new poetry and photography exhibition by award-winning poet and playwright <a target=\"newwinddow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/people\/Inua-Ellams\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Inua Ellams<\/a> (Three Sisters, Half God of Rainfall) and acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Oluwamuyiwa \u201cLogor\u201d Logo, at Somerset House\u2019s West Wing Gallery from 8\u201314 September 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the Step Inside Weekend celebrating Somerset House\u2019s 25th birthday, this free interactive event will feature recorded performances of Ellams\u2019 poems alongside Logor\u2019s portraits, offering a vivid glimpse into the economics of life in Africa\u2019s most populous city.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition pairs 14 sonnets with 14 striking portraits, each depicting how money changes hands in Lagos over the course of a single day. Inspired by Ellams\u2019 encounters in Lagos while researching Barber Shop Chronicles, the work subverts the negative stereotypes associated with the phrase \u201c419\u201d\u2014a reference to Nigeria\u2019s anti-fraud law\u2014through humorous and heartfelt storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>The poems will be performed in recordings by Jonathan Ajayi (Noughts and Crosses), <a target=\"newwinddow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/people\/Hammed-Animashaun\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Hammed Animashaun<\/a> (A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream, Barber Shop Chronicles), <a target=\"newwinddow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/people\/Sule-Rimi\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Sule Rimi<\/a> (Doctor Who, Blues for an Alabama Sky), Diana Yekinni (Three Sisters, For Love), and Antonia Layiwola, directed by <a target=\"newwinddow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/people\/Gbolahan-Obisesan\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Gbolahan Obisesan<\/a> (The Last King of Scotland, Cuttin\u2019 It).<\/p>\n<p>Ellams explains, \u201cThe 419 represents an opportunity to explore, debunk, and narrate the stereotypes I had unconsciously digested as a Nigerian expat living in England.\u201d Logo adds, \u201cWhen poetry and photography meet, they tease out the soul of a place. In Nigeria&#8217;s case, that soul is layered, lyrical, and always on the brink of theatre.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 419 runs 8\u201314 September 2025 at the West Wing Gallery, Somerset House, as part of the Step Inside Weekend.
