{"id":337218,"date":"2025-08-12T01:45:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T01:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/337218\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T01:45:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T01:45:14","slug":"staff-fear-uks-turing-ai-institute-at-risk-of-collapse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/337218\/","title":{"rendered":"Staff fear UK&#8217;s Turing AI Institute at risk of collapse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Department for Science, Innovation &amp; Technology (DSIT) spokesperson said the institute &#8220;is an independent organisation and has been consulting on changes to refocus its work under its Turing 2.0 strategy&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The changes set out in his letter would do exactly that, giving the Institute a key role in safeguarding our national security and positioning it where the British public expects it to be,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It comes after Kyle urged the Turing Institute to focus on defence research and suggested funding would be pulled unless it changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Kyle also wants an overhaul of its leadership. Any shift to focusing on defence would be a significant pivot for the publicly funded organisation, which was given a grant of \u00a3100m by the previous Conservative government last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Founded in 2015 as the UK&#8217;s leading centre of AI research, the Turing Institute has been rocked by internal discontent and criticism of its research activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In the complaint, the staff said Kyle&#8217;s letter had triggered &#8220;a crisis in governance&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The government&#8217;s \u00a3100m grant was &#8220;now at risk of being withdrawn, a move that could lead to the institute&#8217;s collapse&#8221;, the complaint said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Turing Institute told the BBC it was undertaking &#8220;substantial organisational change to ensure we deliver on the promise and unique role of the UK&#8217;s national institute for data science and AI&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;As we move forward, we&#8217;re focused on delivering real world impact across society&#8217;s biggest challenges, including responding to the national need to double down on our work in defence, national security and sovereign capabilities,&#8221; said a spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The BBC has been told the Turing Institute has not received notification of a complaint and has not seen the letter sent by staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A Charity Commission spokesperson said: &#8220;We are currently assessing concerns raised about the Alan Turing Institute to determine any regulatory role for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They said it is in the early stages of this assessment and has not decided whether to launch a formal legal investigation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Department for Science, Innovation &amp; Technology (DSIT) spokesperson said the institute &#8220;is an independent organisation and has&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":337219,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7757],"tags":[748,393,4884,257,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-337218","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-london","8":"tag-britain","9":"tag-england","10":"tag-great-britain","11":"tag-london","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115013269786398234","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/337218","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=337218"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/337218\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/337219"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=337218"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=337218"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=337218"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
