{"id":337357,"date":"2025-08-12T02:58:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T02:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/337357\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T02:58:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T02:58:11","slug":"chinese-warship-crashes-into-own-coast-guard-vessel-while-chasing-philippines-boat-in-south-china-sea-south-china-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/337357\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese warship crashes into own coast guard vessel while chasing Philippines boat in South China Sea | South China Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A Chinese warship collided with a vessel from its own coast guard while chasing a Philippine patrol boat in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/south-china-sea\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South China Sea<\/a> on Monday, Manila said, releasing dramatic video footage of the confrontation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The incident occurred near the contested Scarborough Shoal as the Philippine Coast Guard escorted vessels distributing aid to fishers in the area, said coast guard spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Video released by Manila showed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/china\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China<\/a> Coast Guard ship and a much larger vessel bearing the number 164 on its hull colliding with a loud crash in the wake of the Philippine vessel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Additional footage and photos released later by the Philippine Coast Guard showed the stricken Chinese vessel still afloat but with its entire bow crumpled inward.<\/p>\n<p>This handout video grab taken by the Philippine Coast Guard shows a Chinese Coast Guard ship with a damaged bow after an incident with a Chinese Navy vessel on Monday. Photograph: Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe [China Coast Guard vessel] CCG 3104, which was chasing the [Filipino coast guard vessel] BRP Suluan at high speed, performed a risky manoeuvre from the [Philippine] vessel\u2019s starboard quarter, leading to the impact with the PLA [People\u2019s Liberation Army] Navy warship,\u201d Tarriella said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis resulted in substantial damage to the CCG vessel\u2019s forecastle, rendering it unseaworthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Earlier in the confrontation, the BRP Suluan was \u201ctargeted with a water cannon\u201d by the Chinese but \u201csuccessfully\u201d evaded it, Tarriela\u2019s statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At a later press briefing, Tarriella said crew members aboard the smaller Chinese vessel had been visible in its front section just before the collision. \u201cWe\u2019re not sure whether they were able to rescue those personnel who were in front prior to the collision. But we are hoping that these personnel are in good condition,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tarriela said the Chinese crew \u201cnever responded\u201d to the Philippine ship\u2019s offer of assistance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gan Yu, a Chinese coast guard spokesperson, confirmed that a confrontation had taken place, without mentioning the collision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe China Coast Guard took necessary measures in accordance with the law, including monitoring, pressing from the outside, blocking and controlling the Philippine vessels to drive them away,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">China\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not confirm or deny the collision when asked about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Monday\u2019s incident is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/apr\/28\/china-philippines-flags-sandy-cay-south-china-sea\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest in a series of confrontations<\/a> between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea, which Beijing claims almost entirely despite an international ruling that the assertion has no legal basis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">More than 60% of global maritime trade passes through the disputed waterway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Speaking at a news conference, Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos said the country\u2019s patrol vessels would \u201ccontinue to be present\u201d in the area to defend, as well as exercise Manila\u2019s sovereign rights over, what it considers to be part of its territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Scarborough Shoal \u2013 a triangular chain of reefs and rocks \u2013 has been a flashpoint between the countries since China seized it from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/philippines\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philippines<\/a> in 2012.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Chinese warship collided with a vessel from its own coast guard while chasing a Philippine patrol boat&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":337358,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[13,12,14],"class_list":{"0":"post-337357","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-news","8":"tag-headlines","9":"tag-news","10":"tag-top-stories"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115013556811358120","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/337357","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=337357"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/337357\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/337358"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=337357"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=337357"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=337357"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
