{"id":337549,"date":"2025-08-12T04:41:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T04:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/337549\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T04:41:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T04:41:11","slug":"gender-critical-group-threaten-to-sue-glasgow-university-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/337549\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender critical group threaten to sue Glasgow University Union"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The women\u2019s rights group attended the Glasgow University Union (GUU) for\u00a0a social event which followed a public demonstration held in front of the Kelvingrove <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/topics\/art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Art<\/a> Gallery and Museum.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  After arriving in the GUU, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/topics\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Herald<\/a> understands that attendees decorated the room they had booked for dinner with banners which had featured in their demonstration.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KODPOW\/status\/1954219592454115755\" rel=\"nofollow\">Images<\/a> shared on social media appear to show banners displayed inside the room reading: \u2018Women\u2019s rights are not a hate crime\u2019, \u2018I&#8217;m not a vet, but I know what a dog is\u2019, \u2018Better to die on your feet than forever live on your knees\u2019, and \u2018We are all Sandie Peggie\u2019 among other slogans.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Sandie Peggie is Scottish nurse at the centre of an ongoing employment tribunal who was recently cleared of gross misconduct following disciplinary proceedings with NHS Fife, after she faced allegations of failing to uphold patient safety as well as misgendering Dr Beth Upton, a transgender doctor.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <strong>Read More:<\/strong>\u200b\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/theposieparker\/status\/1954485655452737801?s=46\" rel=\"nofollow\">video<\/a> shared by Kelly-Jay Keen, Organiser of Let Women Speak, on X, formerly known as Twitter, appears to show a member of GUU staff telling the group that they had been \u201cconfrontational towards staff\u201d and that as a result they were \u201cgoing to have to ask them to leave.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  An additional video shared from the same account appears to show Keen, also known as Posie Parker, addressing the Let Women Speak group saying that the GUU had \u201ctold us to leave\u2026on the basis of our beliefs.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She went on to say: \u201cQuestioning someone&#8217;s belief will not hold up in a court of law and (staff)\u00a0have put this University liable to being sued for discrimination against women\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  While it exists as a student-run members club, the Glasgow University Union is a separate legal entity from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/topics\/university-of-glasgow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Glasgow<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Let Women Speak is a prominent gender-critical organisation founded by Keen. The group hosts events around the world where they invite women to speak freely in a public setting.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Let Women Speak <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letwomenspeak.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">say<\/a> they are committed to \u201cdefending the rights of women\u201d, whom they describe as \u201cadult human females\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  However, some have criticised Let Women Speak for being \u201dtransphobic\u201d for their stance on gender, often describing them as \u201cTERFs\u201d, an acronym which stands for \u2018transgender exclusionary, radical feminist\u2019.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  An attendee at the event, Kelly Oliver Dougall, told the student newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hillheadreview.co.uk\/home\/news\/guu-allegedly-denies-service-to-let-women-speak\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hillhead Review<\/a>: &#8220;We were meeting at the Glasgow student union after our Let Women Speak event which was held outside Kelvingrove Museum. We put the banners that we had been holding up on the walls.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Several members of staff came in and said that if we didn&#8217;t take our banners down they would not serve us any more drinks. They stated that this was due to the beliefs on the banners and that their staff felt unsafe.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;They went on to ask us to leave. Which we did. We were due to eat there and had already paid for food.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   alt=\"The social in the Glasgow University Union followed a public event hosted by Let Women Speak.\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>The social in the Glasgow University Union followed a public event hosted by Let Women Speak.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ms Keen has also reiterated her intention to take legal action against the GUU, telling Hillhead Review: &#8220;(The manager)\u00a0claimed that (our banners)\u00a0went against the conduct of the university.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThis is not the first time women have been refused service or kicked out of a venue for our belief that women deserve rights.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;I will be seeking legal advice about the quickest way to get these authoritarians to understand that discriminating against women is unlawful. Frankly, I can\u2019t wait.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In a public <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ThePosieParker\/status\/1954509769534034380\" rel=\"nofollow\">statement<\/a> livestreamed on X, formerly known as Twitter, the day after the event, Keen reaffirmed her commitment to take legal action against the GUU and went on to say: \u201cWe are being ousted from venues, we do Let Women Speak in public because venues cancel.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI think we need to get back to a place where people can say even the most offensive things.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe men who say that women can have penises and it&#8217;s fine for men to go and use women&#8217;s spaces&#8230; I fully support their right to speak, their right to have a venue somewhere, as long as they&#8217;re not inciting violence or breaking the law.
