{"id":337572,"date":"2025-08-12T04:53:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T04:53:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/337572\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T04:53:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T04:53:14","slug":"trump-says-both-sides-in-ukraine-war-will-need-to-cede-territory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/337572\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump says both sides in Ukraine war will need to cede territory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday (August 11, 2025) that Kyiv and Moscow will both have to cede land to end the war in Ukraine and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/international\/trump-to-meet-putin-on-august-15-in-alaska\/article69911513.ece\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"> talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin<\/a> this week will instantly show whether the Kremlin leader is willing to make a deal.<\/p>\n<p>European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plan to speak with Mr. Trump this week ahead of his summit with Putin in Alaska on Friday (August 15, 2025), amid fears Washington may dictate unfavorable peace terms to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump has hardened his stance towards Moscow by agreeing to allow additional U.S. weapons to reach Ukraine and threatening tariffs against buyers of Russian oil but fears persisted in Europe that he might agree to a deal that forces big concessions from Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p><img src-template=\"https:\/\/th-i.thgim.com\/public\/incoming\/w9ha78\/article69915782.ece\/alternates\/SQUARE_80\/2025-08-08T154228Z_166059680_RC223GA1GBX6_RTRMADP_3_UKRAINE-CRISIS-USA-RUSSIA.JPG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/th-i.thgim.com\/public\/incoming\/w9ha78\/article69915782.ece\/alternates\/SQUARE_80\/2025-08-08T154228Z_166059680_RC223GA1GBX6_RTRMADP_3_UKRAINE-CRISIS-USA-RUSSIA.JPG\" alt=\"\" data-device-variant=\"SQUARE~SQUARE~SQUARE~SQUARE\" class=\"media-object lazy adaptive placeholder lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p>European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Monday (August 11, 2025) that \u201ctransatlantic unity, support to Ukraine and pressure on Russia\u201d were needed to end the war and \u201cprevent future Russian aggression in Europe\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump told a White House press conference of his talks with Mr. Putin, \u201cThis is really a feel-out meeting.\u201d He said he would know \u201cprobably in the first two minutes\u201d of his meeting with Mr. Putin whether progress was possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to be telling him, \u2018You\u2019ve got to end this war,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m going to go and see the parameters now. I may leave and say, \u2018Good luck.\u2019 And that\u2019ll be the end. I may say, \u2018This, this is not going to be settled.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump said a future meeting could include Mr. Zelenskyy and the U.S. goal is a speedy ceasefire in the bloody three-and-a-half-year-old conflict. He plans to talk to European leaders soon after his talks with Mr. Putin.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump has in the past talked about land swaps but neither Russia nor Ukraine has been open to ceding land as part of a peace deal.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters, Mr. Trump said: \u201cThere\u2019ll be some land swapping going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that through Russia and through conversations with everybody, to the good of Ukraine,\u201d he said. He said Russia had occupied some \u201cvery prime territory\u201d but \u201cwe\u2019re going to try to get some of that territory back.\u201d&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Kallas said in a post on X that the EU would work to increase sanctions against Russia, military support for Ukraine and assistance for Ukraine\u2019s budget needs and accession to the EU.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. tariffs on Indian oil imports from Russia a &#8216;big blow&#8217; to Moscow<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump on Monday said American tariffs imposed on India for purchasing Russian oil have dealt a &#8220;big blow&#8221; to Moscow&#8217;s economy, which is not doing well, as he referred to New Delhi as Russia&#8217;s &#8220;largest or second largest oil buyer&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;I think Russia has to get back into building their country. It&#8217;s a massive country&#8230; They have tremendous potential in Russia to do well. They&#8217;re not doing well. Their economy is not doing well right now because it&#8217;s been very well disturbed by this,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;Doesn&#8217;t help when the President of the United States tells their largest or second-largest oil buyer that we&#8217;re putting a 50% tariff on you if you buy oil from Russia. That was a big blow,&#8221; Mr. Trump said, in an apparent reference to India.<\/p>\n<p> Trump has imposed 25% reciprocal tariffs on India, along with an additional 25% levy on its purchases of Russian oil, resulting in a total of 50% duties.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine warns against concessions to Russia<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Zelenskyy warned on Monday (August 11, 2025) that any concessions to Russia would not persuade it to stop fighting and more pressure needed to be exerted on the Kremlin. He urged countries to keep their sanctions against Russia in place until Ukraine receives security guarantees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia refuses to stop the killings, and therefore must not receive any rewards or benefits,\u201d he wrote on X. \u201cConcessions do not persuade a killer.\u201d&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has sought to push back Russian invaders ever since the largest and deadliest war in Europe since World War Two began in February 2022. Mr. Putin launched the invasion to take over Ukraine and expand Russia\u2019s sphere of influence.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Zelenskyy spoke to the leaders of India and Saudi Arabia on Monday (August 11, 2025), in an effort to mobilise support for Kyiv beyond Europe ahead of Mr. Trump\u2019s meeting with Mr. Putin.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Putin has also made a flurry of calls in recent days, speaking to the leaders of China, India, Brazil and three ex-Soviet states to brief them on his contacts with the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Germany will convene a virtual meeting of European leaders on Wednesday (August 13, 2025) to discuss how to pressure Russia ahead of a European call with Mr. Trump. Mr. Zelenskyy and EU and NATO officials are expected to join the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump\u2019s mention of exchanging land reiterated his comment last week that a possible deal would involve \u201csome swapping of territories to the betterment of both sides\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has not disclosed its proposed territorial exchanges or any mechanism to ensure that Putin complies with a ceasefire and does not try to overrun more of Ukraine.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s special envoy to Ukraine, retired U.S. Army General Keith Kellogg, earlier this year proposed a \u201cresiliency force\u201d of European NATO troops to secure the frontlines, as well as creating an 18-mile-wide demilitarized zone in eastern Ukraine.
