Putin is readying for a new offensive not a ceasefire, says Zelensky<\/p>\n

Citing reports from Ukraine\u2019s intelligence and military command, President Zelensky of Ukraine warned Vladimir Putin was making preparations for new offensive operations in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo far, there is no indication whatsoever that the Russians have received signals to prepare for a post-war situation,\u201d Volodymyr Zelensky said in his nightly address.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the contrary, they are redeploying their troops and forces in ways that suggest preparations for new offensive operations\u201d.<\/p>\n

Putin is \u201cdefinitely not preparing for a ceasefire or an end to the war,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cPutin is determined only to present a meeting with America as his personal victory and then continue acting exactly as before, applying the same pressure on Ukraine as before,\u201d Zelensky said in his nightly address.<\/p>\n

Putin cannot be trusted \u201cas far as you could throw him\u201d, No 10 said on Monday, as Britain pushed for guarantees to ensure that any pause in the fighting agreed at the meeting between the two presidents is not used by Russia simply as a breathing space to prepare for a new offensive.<\/p>\n

European leaders urged Trump over the weekend to allow Ukraine to take part in the talks, nervous at what he might cede to Putin<\/a> at the summit.<\/p>\n

Trump confirmed that Zelensky would not attend his meeting with Putin in Alaska<\/a> on Friday. He said he would instead call the Ukrainian president once the summit was over. He speculated that Zelensky could meet Putin afterwards. \u201cI\u2019ll be there if they need,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Trump said he would only call Zelensky if Putin proposed a \u201cfair deal\u201d. \u201cI may say, \u2018lots of luck, keep fighting\u2019, or I may say, \u2018we can make a deal\u2019,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Before Friday\u2019s summit, Zelensky is expected to join a call of European leaders with Trump on Wednesday, offering him a last opportunity to plead Ukraine\u2019s case.<\/p>\n

Trump criticises Zelensky for refusing to cede territory<\/p>\n

US President Trump criticised President Zelensky of Ukraine for refusing to cede territory and repeated that there needed to be some \u201cland swapping\u201d to end the war.<\/p>\n

In some of his harshest remarks about Zelensky<\/a> in the past several months, Trump said he \u201cvery severely\u201d disagreed with his handling of the war, saying \u201cit never should have happened\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was a little bothered by the fact Zelensky was saying \u2018I have to get constitutional approval\u2019,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s got approval to go into war and kill everybody? But he needs approval to do a land swap?\u201d<\/p>\n

European countries have said any ceasefire should be agreed on the basis of the present 680-mile long front line and are urging Trump not to accept a peace settlement that would award Putin more land.<\/p>\n

Trump to \u2018get back Ukraine\u2019s oceanfront property\u2019 from Russia<\/p>\n

President Trump has said Ukraine must accept the redrawing of its borders to achieve peace and that he would \u201ctry to get back\u201d some of the country\u2019s \u201coceanfront property\u201d from Russia during talks with President Putin in Alaska on Friday.<\/p>\n

In a press conference lasting longer than an hour, Trump confirmed that Zelensky would not attend his meeting with Putin in Alaska<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n

Speaking about conditions for a ceasefire, Trump said: \u201cThere will be some land-swapping going on. I know that through Russia and through conversations with everybody.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to change the lines, the battle lines. Russia has occupied a big portion of Ukraine. They\u2019ve occupied some very prime territory. We\u2019re going to try and get some of that territory back for Ukraine. They have taken largely \u2014 in real estate we call it oceanfront property. That\u2019s always the most valuable property.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump appeared to be referring to the territory on the Black Sea and Sea of Azov, a stretch of coastline that includes the city of Mariupol.
