The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/world-news\/deep-sea-fisherman-reels-orange-35412342\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">elusive sea creature was recorded<\/a> nearly 2.4 miles down using a remotely operated submersible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Scientists were investigating a canyon when the pink sea <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/animals\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">creature <\/a>suddenly began flapping its ear-shaped fins. The extraordinary footage was obtained during an expedition to examine the Mar del Plata submarine canyon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This enormous canyon sits in the South Atlantic Ocean, roughly 193 miles east of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/argentina\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Argentine <\/a>city sharing its name. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/science\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Marine biologists<\/a> reckon it&#8217;s the first-ever recorded sighting of a Dumbo octopus in Argentine waters, according to What&#8217;s The Jam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The expedition is being spearheaded by the US-based Schmidt Ocean Institute, collaborating with Argentina\u2019s National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_VIDEO-Strange-Dumbo-octopus-spotted-by-boffins-two-miles-deep.jpg\" alt=\"A rare Dumbo octopus\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Scientists were investigating a canyon when the creature began flapping its ear-shaped fins(Image: Jam Press\/@schmidtocean)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The pink creature, spotted last Tuesday (5 August), belongs to a genus fittingly called the Dumbo octopus (Grimpoteuthis). Seventeen recognised species comprise the genus, each boasting distinctive fins protruding from the mantle above their eyes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They represent the deepest-living <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/octopuses\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">octopuses <\/a>on record, flourishing in an extreme environment of immense pressure and freezing temperatures. Unlike most octopuses, which depend on jet propulsion, the Dumbo octopus possesses a jelly-like body and travels by beating its fins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Just days before, on 26 July, the same <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/activity-holidays\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">expedition <\/a>recorded a &#8220;cheeky&#8221; starfish featuring a bottom-like crease between its arms. Social media users were quick to point out its striking resemblance to Patrick Star from the popular cartoon <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/spongebob-squarepants\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">SpongeBob SquarePants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Kristen Kusek of the Schmidt Ocean Institute said: &#8220;The &#8216;bum&#8217; is normal, and not a bum at all, but it&#8217;s fun to see folks enjoying it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;It has to do with seawater circulating in its body &#8211; a totally normal process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1_VIDEO-Strange-Dumbo-octopus-spotted-by-boffins-two-miles-deep.jpg\" alt=\"A starfish\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Just days before, the same expedition recorded a &#8220;cheeky&#8221; starfish<br \/>\n(Image: Jam Press\/@schmidtocean)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Dumbo octopuses have a line of around 65 to 68 suckers on each arm, as well as protrusions known as cirri, which are akin to hair. This means they fall into the cirrate octopus group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They generally grow to about 20 to 30 centimetres, but the largest example of the adorable <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/ocean\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">cephalopod <\/a>was a whopping 1.8 metres long and weighed 5.9kg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They are known to live in the deep oceans at depths of 1,000 to 7,000 metres, which includes both the bathyal and abyssal zones, where there is no sunlight and the water is icy cold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In 2020, a Dumbo octopus was filmed at a depth of nearly 7,000 metres in the Java Trench in the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/india\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Indian Ocean<\/a>.
