EPA\/VYACHESLAV PROKOFYEV \/ SPUTNIK \/ KREMLIN POOL MANDATORY CREDIT\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe breach report comes three days before US President Donald Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin (Picture: EPA)<\/p>\n<p><a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia<\/a> appears to be responsible for recently hacking US computers holding federal <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">court<\/a> documents.<\/p>\n<p>The highly sensitive records that were breached could hold details on people charged with national security crimes, multiple sources told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/12\/us\/politics\/russia-hack-federal-court-system.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>It is not clear if Russian intelligence or other nations were involved, or the specific organization. <\/p>\n<p>Documents may have been viewed on mid-level criminal cases in the greater <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York<\/a> City area and a few other jurisdictions. REUTERS\/Kevin Lamarque\/File Photo\/File Photo\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tCourt administrators recently informed the Justice Department of the breach (Picture: Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>Court system administrators recently told the Justice Department and federal court staff that \u2018persistent and sophisticated cyber threat actors have recently compromised sealed records\u2019, states an internal department memo obtained by the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This remains an URGENT MATTER that requires immediate action.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The breach happened around last month, when district court chief justices across the nation were told to move criminal cases with overseas connections in eight or more districts off of the regular system. <\/p>\n<p>Then on Friday, Margo Brodie, the chief justice of the Eastern District of New York, issued an order barring sealed documents from being uploaded to the public database PACER.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SEI_261381111-f78a.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23896838\" alt=\"WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 20: The Department of Justice building on July 20, 2025 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Eric Lee\/Getty Images)\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe Justice Department issues a guidance in 2021 after the system was first breached (Picture: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>The hackers infiltrated the systems in Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and South Dakota, an anonymous official told The Times.<\/p>\n<p>The report comes three days before US President <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> is <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/08\/12\/white-house-reveals-zelensky-wont-attend-trump-meeting-putin-23896473\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set to meet his Russian counterpart<\/a> <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/vladimir-putin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> in Alaska, to discuss and end to the war with <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The court system was first hacked more than four years ago. Russia was not named in a cyberattack that was announced in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The report comes more than six months after <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/12\/30\/china-hackers-stole-us-classified-documents-breach-22270611\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese hackers accessed multiple Treasury Department<\/a> unclassified documents and workstations after clearing a third-arty software security provider.
