{"id":339984,"date":"2025-08-13T02:09:16","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T02:09:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/339984\/"},"modified":"2025-08-13T02:09:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T02:09:16","slug":"eu-starts-fitness-check-into-airport-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/339984\/","title":{"rendered":"EU starts \u2018fitness check\u2019 into airport rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The EU has started a new consultation into the \u201cfitness\u201d of current rules governing airports across the 27 member countries, which impact the price of flights paid by passengers.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission wants feedback on the existing regulations and directives covering airport charges, slot distribution and ground handling services.<\/p>\n<p>The commission wants to assess whether these rules \u201cremain effective\u201d and how they impact the prices charged by airlines to passengers, as well as looking at flight connections and baggage handling services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith market conditions changing, and with environmental priorities in mind, it is important to ensure the rules remain relevant and impactful,\u201d said the commission in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe consultation considers recent trends such as market consolidation, airport capacity challenges, labour shortages, increased competition from non-EU airlines and airports, and the need for decarbonisation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe feedback received will also help the commission identify opportunities for simplification and reduce administrative burdens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The consultation is open until 28 October 2025 and is available through the EU\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/law\/better-regulation\/have-your-say\/initiatives\/14193-Aviation-fitness-check-of-EU-airport-legislation_en\" ek-link=\"true\" title=\"Have your Say portal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Have your Say portal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Apostolos\u00a0Tzitzikostas, the EU\u2019s commissioner for sustainable transport and tourism, added: \u201cAviation plays a pivotal role in increasing mobility, driving economic growth, creating jobs and facilitating trade \u2013 all to the benefit of EU citizens. It is also crucial for maintaining connectivity across the European Union&#8217;s regions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI invite all interested citizens and organisations to share their perspectives on our current airport legislation.
