\u201cIf we had more time, then almost certainly we would have had a majority in favor of halting the bill,\u201d said Alistair Thompson, a spokesperson for Care Not Killing, a campaign group which opposes assisted dying.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will get a much fuller and franker debate in the Lords without people who have genuine concerns being excluded,\u201d Thompson argued.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis particular bill is a very bad one,\u201d concurred Tory peer and opponent Mark Harper. The former cabinet minister claimed some MPs \u201cboth on and off the record \u2026 recognized that the bill is not in great shape and expect the House of Lords to improve it.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, proponents want momentum from the Commons decision to continue \u2014 and are adamant that despite it not being in Labour\u2019s election manifesto, peers shouldn\u2019t override elected MPs.<\/p>\n
Members of the Lords will initially decide \u201cwhether they are inclined to reject it outright,\u201d explained Hansard Society Director Ruth Fox, or push to amend the bill later on.<\/p>\n
