The sign has appeared before several major crashes including in 2008 and 1929.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Since the lows of the financial crisis in March 2009, the S&amp;P 500 has <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/yourmoney\/consumer\/article-12754395\/death-cross-disaster-economy-warn-investors.html\" rel=\"noopener\">endured seven notable death cross events<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; and this week marked the eighth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">On Monday, the S&amp;P 500 saw a death cross, spooking investors after <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/yourmoney\/consumer\/article-14474285\/experts-reveal-worst-thing-401k-stock-market-turbulence.html\" rel=\"noopener\">weeks of market volatility<\/a>\u00a0as a result of Donald Trump&#8217;s sweeping tariff proposals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A similar crossover then occurred several days later on the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was set to become the latest major index to experience a death cross, marking the first time the ominous signal has appeared on the index since 2023.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-f798f97304c9785c\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/97405499-14623471-On_Monday_the_S_P_500_saw_a_death_cross_spooking_investors_after-a-138_17449555588.jpeg\" height=\"318\" width=\"634\" alt=\"On Monday, the S&amp;P 500 saw a death cross, spooking investors after weeks of market volatility as a result of Donald Trump's sweeping tariff proposals\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">On Monday, the S&amp;P 500 saw a death cross, spooking investors after weeks of market volatility as a result of Donald Trump&#8217;s sweeping tariff proposals<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;As the name implies, a death cross is viewed as a bearish technical development and is often used as an indicator pointing to more downside ahead,&#8217; said Bret Kenwell, US Investment Analyst at eToro.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Many investors are already concerned about the possible effect of Trump&#8217;s tariff plans on the economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Billionaire Larry Fink said earlier this month that he thinks <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/yourmoney\/article-14599509\/billionaire-ceo-breaks-cover-US-recession.html\" rel=\"noopener\">the economy has already weakened<\/a>, and may already be in decline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;I think we&#8217;re very close, if not in, a recession now,&#8217; the BlackRock CEO told <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/11\/blackrocks-larry-fink-says-us-is-very-close-to-a-recession-and-may-be-in-one-now.html\">CNBC<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Although <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-14590093\/Donald-Trump-blinks-doubles-China-market-turmoil-President-announces-90-day-pause-tariffs-RAISING-duties-Beijing-huge-125.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump has put larger levies on hold<\/a>\u00a0for now, a 10 percent baseline tariff on goods from 60 countries is still in place, which is concerning both investors and regular Americans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But Kenwell warns investors not to panic about the death cross indicator popping up in the stock market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Looking back on historical data implies that it may not be as ominous as it sounds, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Looking back over the seven other instances since 2009, we found that one month later, the S&amp;P 500 was lower four times with a median decline of 0.9 percent. Kenwell said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;It&#8217;s clear that this lagging indicator did not, even somewhat consistently, show that stocks are bound to fall off a cliff.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">That does not mean that markets cannot deteriorate from current levels, especially <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/yourmoney\/article-14620311\/fed-chair-warning-wall-street-meltdown-tariff-retirement-savings.html\" rel=\"noopener\">due to ongoing macroeconomic issues<\/a>, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But &#8216;a technical death cross for the S&amp;P 500 is not the end-all, be-all knockout that it may seem to be.&#8217;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A rare &#8216;death cross&#8217;
