Living Space Housing is proposing all 54 homes will be \u2018affordable\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">They would comprise four one-bedroom flats, 22 two-bedroom houses, 23 three-bed houses and five four-bed properties on what is currently agricultural land.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/0_Signal-Hayes-Road-proposed-development.jpg\" alt=\"Developer Living Space Housing's proposed planning layout for a 54-home development - the first of man at the 5,500-home Langley development on the edge of Sutton Coldfield \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Developer Living Space Housing&#8217;s proposed planning layout for a 54-home development &#8211; the first of man at the 5,500-home Langley development on the edge of Sutton Coldfield (Image: Living Space Housing)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But the proposal met with criticism from Walmley and Minworth city councillor Ken Wood &#8211; unusually for having \u2018too many affordable homes\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He was keen to point out he supported affordable housing \u2013 but not in the way proposed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He and the Langley consultative group also questioned whether the standard of the development would be \u2018exemplar\u2019 &#8211; of a high standard, saying the proposals did not meet the grade. Coun Wood also said too many homes were planned on the plot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">READ MORE: <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/news\/midlands-news\/eight-big-changes-expected-sutton-30499836\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Eight big changes expected in Sutton in 2025<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Coun Wood (Cons) said: \u201cThis development is by one of the independents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt came completely out of the blue and is for 54 affordable homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cMy feeling is the whole aim of Langley was to have the affordable housing, 35 per cent, across the development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWhat you don\u2019t want is them all in one place. Fifty-four affordable houses clumped together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Coun Wood said the streets at Langley should be \u2018tenure blind\u2019 \u2013 meaning anyone driving through the area should not be able to tell what was or was not affordable housing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He said: \u201cOur desire is to have the affordable housing pepper-potted across the development. Every developer to have 35 per cent of their homes as affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Having them all in one location could lead to people being \u2018stigmatised\u2019, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=218d93d5-683b-44a9-b5bd-566f5c9e39e9&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Get the latest Sutton Coldfield news delivered direct to your inbox<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Coun Wood also criticised the number of homes proposed, saying it was \u2018not too clever\u2019..
