The first full planning application for a housing development on a former greenbelt site has been criticised for having \u2018too many affordable homes\u2019.<\/p>\n
Plans have been submitted by Living Space Housing Limited for 54 homes on land at the corner of Signal Hayes Road and Fox Hollies Road in Walmley, Sutton Coldfield<\/a>.<\/p>\n It is the first formal application for homes on the Langley site, a huge swathe of former green belt land which will eventually see more than 5,500 homes built.<\/p>\n READ MORE: \u00a36m repair plan at city schools amid fears \u2018roofs may collapse\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n The first plot is bordered by a garden centre, a scattering of homes and agricultural land. Living Space Housing is proposing all 54 homes will be \u2018affordable\u2019.<\/p>\n They would comprise four one-bedroom flats, 22 two-bedroom houses, 23 three-bed houses and five four-bed properties on what is currently agricultural land.<\/p>\n But the proposal met with criticism from Walmley and Minworth city councillor Ken Wood – unusually for having \u2018too many affordable homes\u2019.<\/p>\n He was keen to point out he supported affordable housing \u2013 but not in the way proposed.<\/p>\n He and the Langley consultative group also questioned whether the standard of the development would be \u2018exemplar\u2019 – of a high standard, saying the proposals did not meet the grade. Coun Wood also said too many homes were planned on the plot.<\/p>\n READ MORE: Eight big changes expected in Sutton in 2025<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n Coun Wood (Cons) said: \u201cThis development is by one of the independents.<\/p>\n \u201cIt came completely out of the blue and is for 54 affordable homes.<\/p>\n \u201cMy feeling is the whole aim of Langley was to have the affordable housing, 35 per cent, across the development.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat you don\u2019t want is them all in one place. Fifty-four affordable houses clumped together.\u201d<\/p>\n Coun Wood said the streets at Langley should be \u2018tenure blind\u2019 \u2013 meaning anyone driving through the area should not be able to tell what was or was not affordable housing.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cOur desire is to have the affordable housing pepper-potted across the development.
