More than 1,600 drivers were arrested in Liverpool last year for drink or drug driving.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And there were 36 road traffic collisions attributed, at least in part, to drink or drug driving in the city in 2024 \u2013 58% involved alcohol impairment, while in 42% of incidents drug impairment was a factor.<\/p>\n

The most prevalent age group was people between 40 and 49 years of age. Males represent a significantly higher proportion of impaired drivers.<\/p>\n

Now Liverpool City Council is urging drivers to \u2018Avoid the Mourning After\u2019, warning people to make responsible choices and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.<\/p>\n

The campaign aligns with Merseyside Police\u2019s Operation Limit, an enhanced enforcement initiative targeting impaired drivers. Operation Limit is a key component of the 2040 Vision Zero strategy, which aims to eliminate all road deaths and serious injuries across Merseyside by 2040.<\/p>\n

Driving while impaired carries serious consequences, including imprisonment, heavy fines, and mandatory driving bans. Long-term impacts can include a criminal record, increased insurance costs, and barriers to employment and travel.<\/p>\n

Liverpool City Council is committed to protecting all road users and preventing the heartbreak caused by impaired driving. The message is clear: If you drink a little, you risk a lot. Let\u2019s work together to make our roads safer this summer.<\/p>\n

Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, <\/strong>said: \u201cEvery collision caused by drink or drug driving is not just a statistic \u2013 it\u2019s a shattered life, a grieving family, and a community left to pick up the pieces.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is why campaigns like this are so important and can make a real difference. People need to learn that their actions and behaviour can have horrible consequences for other people, not just themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must all take responsibility. If you choose to drive impaired, you\u2019re gambling with lives. Let\u2019s make this summer one of safety, not sorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stuart McIver, Roads Policing Chief Inspector for Merseyside Police<\/strong>, said: \u201cLighter nights and warmer weather usually mean people enjoying barbeques, beer gardens and festivals, which is lovely. The problem can be around getting home afterwards. If you\u2019ve planned to drink any amount at all get public transport or a taxi home. Don\u2019t take the risk.<\/p>\n

\u201cAside from the potential driving ban, prison sentence and \u00a35000 fine, the potential human cost if you were to get behind the wheel after a drink is just unthinkable. For the sake of a pint of lager or a glass of wine, you could ruin multiple lives. Including your own.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe same is true for drug driving. Both non-prescription and some prescription drugs can severely impair your ability to drive safely.\u00a0 Our stance as a force on drug-driving is well known: it will not be tolerated in Merseyside.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe penalty for drug driving is a potential driving ban, an unlimited fine, and potential custodial sentence. \u201cPlan ahead. Do not drug or drink drive. We will be out patrolling and actively testing.
