{"id":341316,"date":"2025-08-13T14:04:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T14:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/341316\/"},"modified":"2025-08-13T14:04:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T14:04:10","slug":"mohamed-al-fayed-146-people-report-crimes-to-investigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/341316\/","title":{"rendered":"Mohamed Al Fayed: 146 people report crimes to investigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The latest figure is more than double the 61 people who the Met said had reported allegations the last time it released a number in October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Harrods said more than 100 victims of Al Fayed&#8217;s abuse had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c62gp3nny2go\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entered its compensation scheme<\/a> in July. Al Fayed owned the luxury department store between 1985 and 2010.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The store started issuing compensation at the end of April and the scheme remains open for new applications until 31 March 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Eligible applicants could receive up to \u00a3385,000 in compensation, plus treatment costs, if they agree to be assessed by a consultant psychiatrist, Harrods said in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They are also offered a meeting with a senior Harrods&#8217; representative to receive an apology in person or by video, as well as a written apology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The extent of Al Fayed&#8217;s predatory behaviour was brought to light by a BBC documentary and podcast, broadcast in September 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episode\/m0023ff5\/al-fayed-predator-at-harrods\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Al Fayed: Predator at Harrods<\/a> heard testimony from more than 20 female ex-Harrods employees who said Al Fayed sexually assaulted or raped them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Since then, dozens more women have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c4g2z7negyyo\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">come forward with similar experiences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Responding to the BBC investigation at the time, Harrods&#8217; current owners said they were &#8220;utterly appalled&#8221; by the allegations and that his victims had been failed &#8211; for which the store sincerely apologised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It was only after the broadcast that the Met revealed it had been approached by 21 women before Al Fayed&#8217;s death, who accused him of sexual offences including rape, sexual assault and trafficking. Despite this, he was never charged with any offences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In October, the Met said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c0kj2vkjn58o\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">40 new allegations including sexual assault and rape<\/a> had been made against Al Fayed, covering a period between 1979 and 2013.
