The van has cameras on the roof and a sign on the back saying &quot;Live Facial Recognition in Operation&quot;.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/d71bae38-f6e6-4a80-a611-ca2e389b76d8.jpg.webp.webp\"  width=\"1000\" height=\"562\" class=\"ssrcss-11yxrdo-Image edrdn950\"\/>Image source, PA Media<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ten Live Facial Recognition (LFR) vans will be used by seven police forces in England to help catch serious criminals, the Home Office has announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Speaking on BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today programme this morning, Home Office minister Dame Diana Johnson said the technology would be used to identify offenders wanted for serious crimes such as \u201crape, GBH, robbery, knife crime and domestic abuse\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">LFR has been used for almost a decade, and we know that at least six forces in England and Wales have deployed the technology:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ssrcss-1ynsflq-UnorderedList e1q8fsc70\">\n<li spacing=\"rich-text\" class=\"ssrcss-131sxq9-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n      Metropolitan Police\n    <\/li>\n<li spacing=\"rich-text\" class=\"ssrcss-131sxq9-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n      South Wales Police\n    <\/li>\n<li spacing=\"rich-text\" class=\"ssrcss-131sxq9-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n      Northamptonshire Police\n    <\/li>\n<li spacing=\"rich-text\" class=\"ssrcss-131sxq9-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n      Bedfordshire Police\n    <\/li>\n<li spacing=\"rich-text\" class=\"ssrcss-131sxq9-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n      Hampshire Police\n    <\/li>\n<li spacing=\"rich-text\" class=\"ssrcss-131sxq9-Stack e1y4nx260\">\n      Essex Police\n    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">I\u2019ve contacted each force to ask how often and for what reason this technology has been used.
