{"id":342370,"date":"2025-08-13T23:19:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T23:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/342370\/"},"modified":"2025-08-13T23:19:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T23:19:14","slug":"uk-france-and-germany-threaten-to-reimpose-sanctions-on-iran-as-nuclear-program-deadline-nears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/342370\/","title":{"rendered":"UK, France and Germany threaten to reimpose sanctions on Iran as nuclear program deadline nears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Britain, France, and Germany have threatened to reimpose sanctions on Iran as an end-of-the-month deadline nears for the country to resume negotiations with the West over its nuclear program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Top diplomats of the three countries, known as the E3, wrote in a letter to the United Nations that they were willing to trigger a process known as the &#8220;snapback&#8221; mechanism, which allows one of the Western parties to reimpose UN sanctions if Tehran doesn&#8217;t comply with its requirements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">French Foreign Minister Jean-N\u00f6el Barrot posted the letter to his X account on Wednesday, local time, and had co-signed it along with top diplomats from Germany and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;E3 have always committed to use all diplomatic tools at our disposal to ensure Iran does not develop a nuclear weapon,&#8221; the letter said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We have made clear that if Iran is not willing to reach a diplomatic solution before the end of August 2025, or does not seize the opportunity of an extension, E3 are prepared to trigger the snapback mechanism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ayatollah Ali Khamenei wears black headwear and glasses sitting in front of an Iranian flag.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/d6c3cb7df19068fac63d793ceaf9cda7\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Iran&#8217;s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei suspended his country&#8217;s ties with the IAEA. (Getty: Iranian Religious Leader Press Office\/Anadolu Agency)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Iranian government didn&#8217;t immediately respond to the development, but parliament member Manouchehr Mottaki \u2014 who was Iran&#8217;s top diplomat for five years in the 2000s \u2014 warned of a swift reaction to any move to trigger the snapback mechanism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said the Iranian parliament has a &#8220;finger on the trigger&#8221; for quitting the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, or NPT, the international treaty aimed at halting the spread of nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We only need 24 hours to approve quitting the nuclear deal,&#8221; if the E3 raises the issue at the UN Security Council, Mr Mottaki said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The letter from the E3 comes following a period of apparent diplomatic deadlock after a 12-day war between Iran and Israel in June, where Israeli and American jets struck some key nuclear-related facilities in the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The countries met with Iranian officials last month in T\u00fcrkiye at Iran&#8217;s consulate building in Istanbul on the possibility of reimposing international sanctions, lifted in 2015 in exchange for Tehran accepting restrictions and monitoring of its nuclear program.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-23\/satellite-images-show-damage-at-iranian-nuclear-sites\/105449430\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Satellite images show damage at Iranian nuclear sites<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">New satellite imagery shows US stealth bombers appear to have targeted a vulnerable spot in one of Iran&#8217;s key nuclear sites, buried deep in a mountain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Iran&#8217;s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, said at the time that he hoped that the meeting would see the E3 nations reassess their &#8220;previous unconstructive attitude&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Since the war, talks with Washington for a new nuclear deal haven&#8217;t resumed, and Iran has since <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-03\/iran-suspends-cooperation-with-nuclear-watchdog\/105488370\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105488370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suspended ties with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)<\/a>, the UN nuclear watchdog, following the attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The IAEA&#8217;s first visit to Iran since the war didn&#8217;t entail any visits to nuclear facilities on Monday, and cooperation wasn&#8217;t officially restored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Josef Hinterseher said that the letter &#8220;once again underlines that the legal preconditions for snapback have long existed&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Our position and our appeal is, very clearly, that Iran still has the choice of deciding to return to diplomacy \u2026 and full cooperation with the IAEA,&#8221; he told reporters at a regular news conference in Berlin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">US intelligence agencies and the IAEA had assessed Iran last had an organised nuclear weapons program in 2003, though Tehran had been enriching uranium up to 60 per cent \u2014 a short, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-30\/iran-could-enrich-uranium-within-months-iaea-says\/105475434\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105475434\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90 per cent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The IAEA didn&#8217;t immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Iran&#8217;s president mocks Netanyahu<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian hit out at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu&#8217;s call for Iranians to rise up against their government over power and water shortages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Netanyahu&#8217;s video message on Tuesday came as Iran grapples with <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-02\/iran-and-middle-east-record-heat-drought-wildfires\/105590076\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105590076\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">persistent water and electricity shortages amid spells of hot weather<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In his remarks, the Israeli premier called on Iranians to &#8220;take risks for freedom&#8221;, &#8220;take to the streets,&#8221; and demand accountability from the Iranian government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He suggested bringing Israeli water experts to provide &#8220;cutting-edge technology and know-how&#8221; What a mirage!&#8221; said Mr Pezeshkian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Last week, Mr Pezeshkian told a group off officials that &#8220;we do not have water, we do not have water under our feet, and we do not have water behind our dams, so you tell me what do we do?
