She works as a primary school teacher and ‘likes to draw on the stories passed down by her highly respected Elder grandparents to write fiction for children and young adults’, said the publisher.

McKenna is a Yawuru artist and writer based in Broome. A fan of comic books since young, McKenna studied visual arts at Goulburn TAFE, and in 2011 became the first published Indigenous graphic novelist, releasing Ubby’s Underdogs: The Legend of the Phoenix Dragon (Magabala Books). When he’s not drawing, McKenna runs creative storytelling workshops for young people.

UQP children’s publisher Cathy Vallance said, ‘I was hooked the moment I started reading. Joey’s voice explodes off the page – he’s cheeky, creative and full of wild antics. But the story also radiates with heart, through themes of second chances, belonging and caring for Country.’

Rocca said, ‘This story – first told to me by my grandparents when I was a child – is one I’ve always loved and dreamed of sharing with young readers. I’m incredibly grateful to be working with the talented UQP team, who not only believe in the heart and soul of my story but also share my commitment to getting more books featuring First Nations voices into the hands of kids.’

McKenna said, ‘Finally! It’s so good to see our First Nations folklore stories being told with a modern twist and a lot of cheek. I was honoured to be asked to illustrate Joey and the Junjardy. So many of our mob will identify with a lot of themes that resonate in all our communities in this book. There are so many deadly folklore stories from our mob would make great modern tales, and I believe this one by Allison Rocca is going to be one of them.’

UQP plans to publish Joey and the Junjardy in July 2026.

Pictured: Allison Rocca.

Category: Local news Rights and acquisitions

Thursday, 14 August 2025 Books+Publishing @booksandpublishing UQP has acquired world rights to the debut middle-grade novel Joey…

[3938
11410,186,29677,29680,29674,17976,3444,29679,29681,77,29676,704,29678,29675,16,15
0":"post-342428","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-books","8":"tag-asia-pacific","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-author-interviews","11":"tag-book-awards","12":"tag-book-news","13":"tag-book-reviews","14":"tag-books","15":"tag-bookseller-jobs","16":"tag-ebooks","17":"tag-entertainment","18":"tag-library-news","19":"tag-new-zealand","20":"tag-publishing-jobs","21":"tag-publishing-news","22":"tag-uk","23":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
