Departures from Libya drive much of this flow.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Frontex reported that smugglers here operate in highly organized networks, exploiting political instability despite increased anti-migration operations.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A new corridor from eastern Libya to Crete has also emerged. Over 10,000 migrants have used this path so far this year, more than four times last year\u2019s total.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sharp declines in other major routes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/western-balkans-route\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Western Balkan route<\/a> dropped 47%, while the Eastern Land Borders fell 45%. The Western African route saw a 46% decline, with only 175 arrivals in July.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Frontex attributed much of this drop to tighter border controls, stronger surveillance, and closer cooperation between the EU and departure countries such as Mauritania.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Eastern Mediterranean route fell 16% to 26,200 crossings, but the Western Mediterranean bucked the trend, rising 11%.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Algerian-Moroccan smuggling networks continue to move migrants toward <a href=\"https:\/\/etias.com\/etias-countries\/spain-etias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain<\/a>, with prices ranging from \u20ac900 to \u20ac20,000, depending on the path.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Surge in channel crossings to UK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In contrast to the EU\u2019s overall decline, attempts to reach the UK via the Channel rose 26% to 41,800.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Authorities linked this rise to favorable weather, \u201ctaxi boats\u201d picking up migrants from multiple coastal spots, and a growing practice of launching many overcrowded boats at once.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Some vessels now carry up to 100 people, many of whom are in unsafe conditions.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/european-border-and-coast-guard-launch-in-bulgaria.jpg\" alt=\"European Border and Coast Guard officers standing side by side in uniform and blue vests.\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\"\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">(Image courtesy of VBorishev via iStock)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Human toll remains high<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Despite fewer crossings overall, the International Organization for Migration estimated 947 deaths in the Mediterranean so far this year.
