Trump administration has published a report claiming that human rights in the United Kingdom \u201cworsened\u201d over the past year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9x1w8100053b6n1c0viu4h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/624521_UNITED-KINGDOM-2024-HUMAN-RIGHTS-REPORT.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>, part of the US State Department\u2019s global survey of human rights and covers the 2024 calendar year, criticized what it said were \u201cserious restrictions\u201d on free speech and threats of violence motivated by antisemitism.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9x1w8100063b6nqpy76p0d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although other reports in the series claimed human rights also regressed in countries like France and Germany, the list of grievances in the UK was far longer, underscoring the supposed backsliding in the age of social media.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9y01kr00023b6nyl0yrngv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Specifically on freedom of speech in the UK, the US report said that \u201cthe government generally respected this right\u201d but that \u201cthere were specific areas of concern, including involving restrictions on political speech deemed \u2018hateful\u2019 or \u2018offensive.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9xke0n00003b6njbklzkiv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A UK government spokesperson said that free speech is \u201cvital for democracy,\u201d and that \u201cwe are proud to uphold freedoms whilst keeping our citizens safe.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9x1w8100073b6ngyhiytyh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Speaking at the Munich Security Conference in February, Vice President JD Vance \u2013 who is currently on vacation in England\u2019s rural Cotswolds \u2013 claimed that free speech across Europe is <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2025\/02\/14\/europe\/jd-vance-munich-speech-europe-voters-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cin retreat\u201d<\/a> and singled out Britain as the country where the \u201cbasic liberties\u201d of citizens had been caught \u201cin the crosshairs.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9x1w8100083b6nhloh4z6r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The report singled out the response by what was then the young government of Prime Minister Keir Starmer to the murder of three schoolgirls by Axel Rudakubana, the British son of Rwandan migrants, in the northern English town of Southport last year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9y0tab00043b6nff1s4ezu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The murders \u2013 and misinformation about the identity of the perpetrator \u2013 sparked <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2024\/08\/01\/uk\/southport-attack-disinformation-far-right-riots-intl-gbr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-immigration riots<\/a> across the country, prompting some to <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2024\/08\/06\/uk\/rotherham-uk-far-right-riot-protest-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set fire to a hotel<\/a> used to house asylum seekers while people were inside.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-2228300847.jpg\" alt=\"US Vice President JD Vance has accused the UK of backsliding on civil liberties.\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9x1w8100093b6nlvwu657q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the wake of the Southport killings, government officials \u201crepeatedly intervened to chill speech as to the identity and motives of the attacker,\u201d the report said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9yeq58000z3b6nqwwia1bw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although the report implied nefariousness on the part of the British government, prosecutors applied existing laws, such as the Public Order Act 1986 and the Communications Act 2003, to punish speech deemed \u201cindecent or grossly offensive.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9x1w81000a3b6ntq6ae3l6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To stem the rioting, Starmer \u2013 a former director of public prosecutions \u2013 pledged that those involved would face the \u201cfull force of the law.\u201d That summer, nearly 2,000 people were arrested and more than 1,000 people were charged.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9x1w81000b3b6nsqzy49gz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although the riots swiftly died down after the initial spasm of outrage, many on the British right criticized the government\u2019s response as heavy-handed, designed to throttle conservative views.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9x1w81000c3b6np6ufxh1n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhile many media observers deemed \u2018two-tier\u2019 enforcement of these laws following the Southport attacks an especially grievous example of government censorship, censorship of ordinary Britons was increasingly routine, often targeted at political speech,\u201d the report said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9x1w81000d3b6n8pc3vnex@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It cited the sentencing in July of Lee Joseph Dunn to eight weeks in prison for \u201cposting a meme suggesting a link between migrants and knife crime.\u201d Dunn pleaded guilty to sending messages that were \u201cgrossly offensive,\u201d which prosecutors said risked \u201cworsening community tensions.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9x1w81000e3b6njczf8dhj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dunn\u2019s case was not unusual. In another high-profile instance, Lucy Connolly, a mother and former nanny, was sentenced to 31 months in prison after calling for mass deportation and urging hotels housing immigrants to be set on fire. \u201cIf that makes me racist so be it,\u201d she posted on X at the time.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-2228283789.jpg\" alt=\"Vance and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy went fishing at the British politician's country retreat in Kent, outside London, on August 8.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9x1w81000g3b6n90mkseqn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the UK maintains it is striking a balance between protecting speech and keeping citizens safe, Vance claims the UK has got that balance wrong.
