{"id":342679,"date":"2025-08-14T02:04:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-14T02:04:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/342679\/"},"modified":"2025-08-14T02:04:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T02:04:08","slug":"mayor-backs-medtech-sector-to-create-jobs-and-boost-west-midlands-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/342679\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor backs medtech sector to create jobs and boost West Midlands economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">West Midlands mayor Richard Parker revealed plans to boost the region\u2019s health and medical technology sector during a visit to a Coventry company developing groundbreaking diagnostics technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Parker visited Cytecom, which has created a device that can identify which antibiotic will work against bacterial infections in less than an hour rather than days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">The technology offers a new tool in the fight against antimicrobial resistance, considered one of the top ten biggest health threats to humanity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Parker <a class=\"underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/news\/2100227-richard-parker-unveils-plan-to-boost-pay-and-rebuilt-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched his West Midlands Growth Plan<\/a> three weeks ago, which aims to create 100,000 jobs and put an additional \u00a38,600 into the average worker\u2019s pocket.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Parker said: \u201cAdvances in technology, many of them developed right here in the West Midlands, are helping our hard-working doctors and nurses save more lives than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Under Parker\u2019s Growth Plan, health and medtech is one of five high-growth sectors identified as having potential for creating skilled, high-paid jobs alongside advanced manufacturing, digital and AI technology, and business and financial services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">The region\u2019s health and medtech sector comprises around 700 companies employing more than 14,000 people and generating \u00a36bn annual turnover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Blood stream infections and sepsis are responsible for 20% of all global deaths, a number predicted to rise due to antimicrobial resistance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Cytecom is among 114 health and medtech companies supported by the West Midlands Health Technology Innovation Accelerator, which has raised \u00a350m in private co-investment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Dr Magdalena Karlikowska, chief executive of Cytecom, added: \u201cAntimicrobial resistance already means longer hospital stays, higher healthcare costs, and, tragically, more lives lost.
