After deploying the national guard to the streets of the American capital, Donald Trump<\/a> is now eyeing longer-term powers over authorities, saying on Wednesday that he is seeking to extend his temporary powers over Washington DC\u2019s police department.<\/p>\n

Trump earlier this week invoked a never-before-used clause of the law that sets out the federal district\u2019s governance structure to take temporary control of the police department, but will need Congress\u2019s permission to extend it beyond the 30 days allowed under the statute.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to need a crime bill that we\u2019re going to be putting in, and it\u2019s going to pertain initially to DC,\u201d Trump said. He alluded to other options for extending control of the police department, saying \u201cif it\u2019s a national emergency, we can do it without Congress\u201d.<\/p>\n
