{"id":343200,"date":"2025-08-14T06:45:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-14T06:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/343200\/"},"modified":"2025-08-14T06:45:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T06:45:10","slug":"russia-restricts-calls-on-whatsapp-telegram-as-internet-control-tightens-social-media-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/343200\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia restricts calls on WhatsApp, Telegram as internet control tightens | Social Media News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Russia accuses popular messaging apps of facilitating crime and sabotage as Moscow\u2019s online restrictions tighten amid war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Russia has announced restrictions on voice calls made on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2025\/4\/15\/mark-zuckerberg-back-in-us-court-amid-push-to-break-up-meta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WhatsApp<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/8\/26\/who-is-telegram-founder-pavel-durov-all-to-know-about-his-arrest-in-france\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Telegram<\/a> messaging apps, the latest moves by Moscow to tighten its control over the internet.<\/p>\n<p>The curb on calls is set to impact WhatsApp\u2019s estimated 96 million monthly users in Russia and Telegram\u2019s more than 89 million users, according to Russian media monitoring service Mediascope.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Wednesday, Russia\u2019s media and internet regulator, Roskomnadzor, justified the measure as necessary for fighting crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to law enforcement agencies and numerous appeals from citizens, foreign messengers Telegram and WhatsApp have become the main voice services used to deceive and extort money, and to involve Russian citizens in sabotage and terrorist activities,\u201d the regulator said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepeated requests to take countermeasures have been ignored by the owners of the messengers,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow wants the online messaging services to provide access to user data upon request from law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccess to calls in foreign messengers will be restored after they start complying with Russian legislation,\u201d Roskomnadzor said.<\/p>\n<p>While authorities said only voice calls on the platforms were restricted, users in Russia also reported that video calls were also affected.<\/p>\n<p>Since the beginning of Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has been expanding control over the Russian part of the internet. Security services have frequently claimed that Ukraine was using Telegram to recruit people or commit acts of sabotage in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian government adopted a law last month punishing online users for searching content deemed illicit by authorities.
