That number includes 13m older people in receipt of State Pension payments (classed a contributory benefit), 5.7m on Universal Credit and 3.7m <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/personal-independence-payments\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Personal Independence PaymentLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Personal Independence Payment<\/a> (PIP) claimants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However many people, including those new to State Pension age retirement, or people in receipt of disability benefits such as the new devolved <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/new-pensioner-health-benefit-times-35410184\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Pension Age Disability PaymentLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Pension Age Disability Payment<\/a>, or Adult\/Child Disability Payment, may not be aware of an annual bonus paid to claimants on certain benefits before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/christmas-bonus\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"DWP \u2018Christmas Bonus\u2019Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">DWP \u2018Christmas Bonus\u2019<\/a> is a one-off, tax-free payment of \u00a310 made to people in receipt of certain benefits &#8211; but not Universal Credit.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE: <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/dwp-measures-stop-pip-fraud-35724177\" data-tmdatatrack=\"read-more\" data-tmdatatrack-articleid=\"35724177\" data-tmdatatrack-source=\"editorial\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DWP measures to stop people fraudulently claiming monthly PIP of up to \u00a3749<\/a>READ MORE: <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/parents-pensioners-disabled-people-due-35721165\" data-tmdatatrack=\"read-more\" data-tmdatatrack-articleid=\"35721165\" data-tmdatatrack-source=\"editorial\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parents, pensioners and disabled people due up to \u00a3305 in extra payments this year<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Those on the State Pension, PIP, devolved Scottish disability benefits, Attendance Allowance, Carer\u2019s Allowance &#8211; 23 benefits in total &#8211; will receive the money automatically before Christmas &#8211; if they meet the eligibility criteria during a specific qualifying period, which is typically the first full week in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It\u2019s worth noting that the DWP will issue this as a separate payment, independent of your scheduled State Pension or benefit payment, so it may arrive on a different day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Nobody needs to apply for the extra \u00a310 as it should automatically go into the account where you usually receive your benefit payment or State Pension. It usually shows as \u2018DWP XB\u2019 on bank statements and online accounts, but we will confirm the exact code to look out for nearer the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The \u00a310 Christmas Bonus was introduced by Ted Heath\u2019s Conservative Government in 1972. It has not been uprated or increased since it launched over five decades ago and in today\u2019s money, it would be worth around \u00a3118 &#8211; when calculated under the composite price index published by the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bankofengland.co.uk\/monetary-policy\/inflation\/inflation-calculator\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"UK Office for National StatisticsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">UK Office for National Statistics<\/a> (ONS).<\/p>\n<p>Who is eligible for the \u00a310 Christmas Bonus?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">To qualify for the Christmas Bonus you must be present or \u2018ordinarily resident\u2019 in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man, Gibraltar, during the qualifying week of December 1 &#8211; 7 (to be confirmed).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The DWP will write to eligible claimants advising them that they will be receiving the \u00a310 bonus in December, but this sometimes arrives after the payment has been made.<\/p>\n<p>Qualifying benefits<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">You must also get at least one of the following benefits in the qualifying week:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Adult Disability Payment (Scotland only)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Armed Forces Independence Payment<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Attendance Allowance<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Carer\u2019s Allowance<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Carer Support Payment (Scotland only)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Child Disability Payment (Scotland only)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Constant Attendance Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance (once the main phase of the benefit is entered after the first 13 weeks of claim)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Disability Living Allowance<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Incapacity Benefit at the long-term rate<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Industrial Death Benefit (for widows or widowers)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Mobility Supplement<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Pension Age Disability Payment (Scotland only)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Pension Credit &#8211; the guarantee element<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Personal Independence Payment (PIP)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">State Pension (including Graduated Retirement Benefit)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Severe Disablement Allowance (transitionally protected)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Unemployability Supplement or Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">War Disablement Pension at State Pension age<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">War Widow\u2019s Pension<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Widowed Mother\u2019s Allowance<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Widowed Parent\u2019s Allowance<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Widow\u2019s Pension<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Not everyone over State Pension age will get the payment, DWP guidance on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/christmas-bonus\/eligibility\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"GOV.UKLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">GOV.UK<\/a> explains: \u201cIf you have not claimed your State Pension and are not entitled to one of the other qualifying benefits you will not get a Christmas Bonus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Married or cohabiting couples and civil partnerships<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The DWP guidance explains that if you\u2019re part of a married couple, in a civil partnership or living together as if you are and you both get one of the qualifying benefits you will each get a \u00a310 Christmas Bonus payment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">If your partner or civil partner does not get one of the qualifying benefits, they may still get the Christmas Bonus if both the following apply:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">you\u2019re both over State Pension age by the end of the qualifying week<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">your partner or civil partner was also present (or \u2018ordinarily resident\u2019) in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Gibraltar, European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland during the qualifying week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">One of the following must also apply:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">You are entitled to an increase of a qualifying benefit for your partner or civil partner<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">the only qualifying benefit you are getting is Pension Credit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How to claim<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">You do not need to claim the Christmas Bonus &#8211; you should get it automatically.
