What am I doing here? What\u2019s going to happen?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o1l6x000b3b6nw6p9kl5i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s a scary thing,\u201d the veteran told CNN from his home in Window Rock, Arizona. \u201cYou don\u2019t know where the bullet or the bomb will come from.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o1l6x000c3b6n4w7xi6l7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Begay landed on the island as a member of the 5th Marine Division, but his role was unique: He was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/11\/28\/us\/navajo-code-talkers-trump-who\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Navajo Code Talker<\/a>, deployed into battle to help the US military send encrypted messages that enemy forces were unable to decipher.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o1l6x000d3b6n95rlym2t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More than 400 Navajo Code Talkers were sent to the Pacific during World War II, operating alongside the Marines at pivotal battles including those at Saipan, Guam, Tinian and Iwo Jima. Their code proved vital: it was never cracked by the Japanese, and allowed US troops to organize their movements without the enemy\u2019s knowledge.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o1l6x000e3b6n7qhoz7lq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Thursday is National Navajo Code Talker Day \u2013 an annual celebration created by President Ronald Reagan in 1982. It is also the 80th anniversary of Japan\u2019s initial surrender in World War II, which effectively ended the costliest war in human history. The documents codifying their surrender were signed a few weeks later.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o1l6x000f3b6n07uq5slq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/21\/us\/navajo-code-talker-john-kinsel-death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just two Code Talkers survive<\/a>. CNN spoke to both \u2013 Peter MacDonald, 96, and Begay, who is now 100 \u2013 about their recollections from the war and how their contributions are recognized across the US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o1l6x000g3b6nds07pmji@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But while their service is recorded in history books, how they are remembered remains a live issue. The Code Talkers have been dragged into the Trump administration\u2019s crackdown on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and a years-long effort to create a dedicated national museum has stalled and may stretch beyond MacDonald and Begay\u2019s lifetimes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o1l6x000h3b6n9z9nions@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For MacDonald, they are trends with troubling historical echoes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o1l6y000i3b6nukwx34po@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s a form of discrimination,\u201d he told CNN of the Pentagon\u2019s deletion in March of webpages documenting their service \u2013 an act the Department of Defense reversed, but which drew fury across the Navajo Nation. \u201cOver 100 years, we lived through all of that discrimination.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o1l6y000j3b6nsbiy08qi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe need to take a serious look at what we are doing here in America,\u201d MacDonald added. \u201cAt what America has done to Native Americans, and maybe other minorities.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o1l6y000k3b6nf5nfdxp5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe need serious discussion,\u201d he said. \u201cWe cannot go on this way.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-2214090201.jpg\" alt=\"Begay during the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, in May 2025 at the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1668\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_drop-cap-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_drop-cap\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8nw8lg00003b6npdwe6wdj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The secretive and dangerous journey that led MacDonald into America\u2019s history books began when he saw another member of his clan in a Marines uniform. \u201cI asked: where can I get one of those beautiful uniforms you\u2019re wearing?\u201d he told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk1000r3b6nbd4y5d35@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            MacDonald was told he\u2019d need to enlist with the Marines. But there was a problem: he was only 15, two years below the age requirement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk1000s3b6nc1g9f8hh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That didn\u2019t deter him. \u201cWe\u2019ve been carrying rifles since we were 7 or 8 years old,\u201d he said, telling his fellow clan member: \u201cWe shoot rabbits, we shoot squirrels, we shoot birds, and sometimes I\u2019m a better shot than you.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk1000t3b6nzro7z999@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            MacDonald lied about his age and enlisted. He told CNN that on his visit to the enrollment office, he said: \u201cI don\u2019t want the Japanese to ever come here to Window Rock, Arizona.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk1000u3b6nxkyujapd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe had seen enough of (that) stuff before, and we don\u2019t like it,\u201d he told CNN. \u201cThis is our land and we\u2019re going to protect it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-96835754.jpg\" alt=\"Navajo Code Talkers Henry Bake and George H. Native people had been full American citizens for just two decades, but they still didn\u2019t have the right to vote. Many Native children, including a significant portion of the Code Talker cohort, were still being taken from their families and forced to enroll in boarding schools, where they were stripped of their language and other traditions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk1000w3b6nu89vjm1z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With the Marines MacDonald was summoned to a meeting, where he found dozens of fellow Navajo. And in that room, he discovered a secret: The same Navajo language that many of his peers were forced to abandon was now being used to win a war.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk1000x3b6ncuh4myxr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The idea had been proposed to the Marines by Philip Johnston, an engineer and the son of a missionary who had grown up alongside Navajo children. It was nearly indecipherable: virtually nobody outside the Navajo nation spoke the language.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk1000y3b6n3gg6z6lh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Code Talkers developed an extensive and complicated code based on their own language, which substituted key military and geographical terms for related images.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk1000z3b6noee5czpt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTank\u201d became \u201cchay-da-gahi,\u201d which means \u201cturtle.\u201d \u201cFighter plane\u201d \u201cwas da-he-tih-hi,\u201d or \u201chummingbird.\u201d In many cases, they were forced to invent new words altogether, because Navajo didn\u2019t contain direct translations.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/navajo-codetalkers-20250813203659633.jpg\" alt=\"The Code Talkers developed an extensive secret code based on their own language, which substituted key military terms for related images.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"900\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk100103b6ns319c2sj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When Code Talkers were deployed in battle they were assigned Marine escorts for protection after multiple Code Talkers were mistaken for Japanese soldiers and confronted by US troops.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk100113b6np6jaxuxh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA lot of times we were mistaken for Japanese,\u201d Chester Nez, a Code Talker who died in 2014, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.loc.gov\/navajo-code-talkers\/profiles\/chester-nez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an oral history interview<\/a> for the Library of Congress. Nez recalled being stopped by a Marine while walking back to camp with a fellow Code Talker on the island of Guadalcanal in 1942. Nez, barred from disclosing any information about the Code Talker program even to fellow Marines, said the pair were telephone operators.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk100123b6nbgwkk463@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe didn\u2019t believe us,\u201d Nez said \u201cThis guy took a .45 and stuck it in my head and my body \u2026 that was the most scary thing that happened to me.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk100133b6n5frettfq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Code Talkers spoke into their hefty radios when an instruction needed relaying.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk100143b6n7kdwg3n7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For example, MacDonald explained that on Iwo Jima, a message needed to be sent to headquarters: \u201cSend demolition team to hill 362B.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk100153b6ni04w9yci@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The message that was transmitted over radio was: \u201cSheep. Eyes. Nose. Deer. Destroyer. Tea. Mouse. Turkey. Onion. Sick horse. Three. Six. Two. It had been hoisted by six Marines days earlier, a moment captured in an iconic photograph by the Associated Press photojournalist Joe Rosenthal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2pk100183b6n3jgf8e03@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMy God,\u201d he said. \u201cI was so proud.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_drop-cap-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_drop-cap\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o2od0000p3b6n32aghkzn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When MacDonald and Begay returned to the US after the war, they were sworn to secrecy. The code talker program remained classified until 1968, in case the military should ever need to reactivate it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3epm001d3b6nrqi01eh4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For the Navajo who powered the program, that meant returning to their pre-war lives, excluded from the heroes\u2019 welcome that many other returning soldiers received.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3epm001e3b6ntsm7fa9k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe had really gotten used to being treated as a second-class citizen,\u201d MacDonald said, adding his experience was \u201cno different\u201d after his return. \u201cWe were very much mistreated in America.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3epm001f3b6n9ktev3zs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe were not rich at all,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe were just trying to survive. I was proud of my dad.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3epm001i3b6nv7kxw8b6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Both men had long post-war careers. Begay retired in 1984 after 40 years of federal service as a superintendent at the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Chinle, Arizona.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3epm001j3b6nd9tg7onh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            MacDonald\u2019s legacy is more complicated. He served four terms as the Navajo Nation chairman, becoming popular for aggressively championing Navajo sovereignty. But he was sentenced to jail time in 1990 on federal and tribal charges, including bribery and racketeering; his earlier refusal to step down when placed on administrative leave led to a lengthy standoff and ultimately a riot in which two of his supporters died. President Bill Clinton would ultimately commute his sentence to time served.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3epm001k3b6nw0059jgs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At a White House reception hosted by President Donald Trump in 2017, MacDonald said he and his then-12 fellow surviving Code Talkers had one last mission: to ensure the memory of their accomplishments was kept alive.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3epm001l3b6nzeurex1c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It is not a memory that has always been respected. MacDonald had hoped that \u201cWindtalkers,\u201d a 2002 action movie based on their contributions, would serve as a cultural touchstone for a new generation. But the production was critically panned and criticized for its historical inaccuracies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3epm001m3b6n2nyu6crt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey asked us to come to their opening,\u201d MacDonald told CNN about the movie\u2019s premiere. \u201cAnd what do we see? About 20% of the movie was Navajo Code Talkers. 80% of the movie was about Nicolas Cage and whatever problem he was having with his girlfriend,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3epm001n3b6nn4apu81q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For several years, one of the best collections of artifacts relating to the Code Talkers was found in an unlikely place: a Burger King in Kayenta, Arizona. Small exhibits also exist in museums in nearby Tuba City and in Gallup, New Mexico, but MacDonald has campaigned for a museum dedicated solely to the Code Talkers. That project is <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/navajo-code-talkers-museum-d3440a6235e77b2f4e85d5e939344996\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ongoing<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2007-06-15t120000z-164541263-gm1dvmjvaaaa-rtrmadp-3-usa-native-codetalkers.jpg\" alt=\"The Navajo Code Talkers monument at Window Rock, Arizona.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_drop-cap-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_drop-cap\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3dol001b3b6n6fql4w4f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Earlier this year, the surviving Code Talkers experienced an unexpected new assault on their legacy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3ufq001s3b6n01ko8yk8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Amid a sweeping purge of webpages that promoted diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts, the Pentagon wiped a number of pages honoring the contribution of MacDonald, Begay and their peers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3ufq001t3b6nwki14vmw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It was part of a hurried crackdown that also saw the deletion of information completely unrelated to DEI issues \u2013 like Holocaust remembrance, suicide prevention and the Enola Gay aircraft \u2013 or pages that commemorated other war heroes like World War II Medal of Honor recipient Pfc. Harold Gonsalves and historically significant service members such as baseball great Jackie Robinson.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3ufq001u3b6nmmmbu19j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe new administration came in, and I guess they want to change a lot of things,\u201d MacDonald told CNN. \u201cThey wanted nothing, no words, about Navajo Code Talkers.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3ufq001v3b6nnzoaey3a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Multiple defense officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/20\/politics\/pentagon-search-keywords-website-purge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told CNN at the time<\/a> that military units were instructed to simply use keyword searches like \u201cracism,\u201d \u201cethnicity,\u201d \u201chistory\u201d and \u201cfirst\u201d when searching for articles and photos to remove.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3ufq001w3b6nhvpsryed@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Pentagon subsequently restored the pages, and Pentagon press secretary John Ullyot said in a statement at the time: \u201cIn the rare cases that content is removed \u2014 either deliberately or by mistake \u2014 that is out of the clearly outlined scope of the directive, we instruct the components and they correct the content so it recognizes our heroes for their dedicated service alongside their fellow Americans, period.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3ufq001x3b6n6uli06ub@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The episode became a flashpoint in the national controversy over the Trump administration\u2019s targeting of DEI initiatives. Ronald Begay, who champions his father\u2019s efforts to preserve the Code Talkers\u2019 legacy, said he was \u201cappalled\u201d by the saga.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3ufq001y3b6nlv0apn3j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI immediately started texting the Navajo Code Talker descendants, as well as some prominent veterans \u2013 we support each other in various ways,\u201d he said. \u201cWhy would they do that?\u201d he asked. \u201cAfter all, that\u2019s why we are free \u2026 our language was historic.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ap17332492410502.jpg\" alt=\"President Donald Trump honors Code Talkers, including Fleming Begaye Sr., left, Begay, center, and MacDonald, right, during a White House ceremony in 2017.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1627\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9yhmmz00003b6nghgbrllc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The episode was quickly undone. But for the Code Talkers and their descendants, it struck at the heart of a deep-rooted fear: that their legacy will be sidelined once MacDonald and Begay are not longer around to tell their stories.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9yjdq500083b6nj8kh4s8x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe need a good \u2018thank you\u2019 from the people who have become wealthy in America,\u201d MacDonald said. He\u2019d like a new movie to be made about their contribution, alongside a permanent, dedicated museum.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9yjdq500093b6nchfup5np@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            MacDonald and other Code Talkers have campaigned for years to make the museum project a reality, but it remains <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/navajo-code-talkers-museum-d3440a6235e77b2f4e85d5e939344996\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tens of millions of dollars<\/a> out of reach, the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper reported in 2023. CNN has contacted organizers of the project for an update on its progress.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme9yjdq5000a3b6nrhers4w9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI don\u2019t believe (people) understand this tremendous contribution to the battle in the Pacific War,\u201d he said. \u201cIt made all the difference in the world.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cme8o3ufq00223b6nw6k21p4r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The next time a post-war milestone is met, it is possible that no Code Talkers will be alive to greet it.
