{"id":344488,"date":"2025-08-14T18:13:16","date_gmt":"2025-08-14T18:13:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/344488\/"},"modified":"2025-08-14T18:13:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T18:13:16","slug":"trumps-big-beautiful-bill-makes-roth-conversions-more-complicated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/344488\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s \u2018big beautiful bill\u2019 makes Roth conversions more complicated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alvaro Gonzalez | Moment | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re eyeing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/30\/roth-conversions-stock-market-downturn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roth conversion<\/a>, President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/guide\/what-trumps-one-big-beautiful-bill-means-for-your-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">big beautiful bill<\/a>&#8221; could make the strategy more complicated, according to financial experts.<\/p>\n<p>Roth conversions transfer pretax or\u00a0nondeductible individual retirement account\u00a0funds to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/retirement-plans\/roth-iras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roth IRA<\/a>, which starts future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/taxes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tax-free growth<\/a>. The trade-off is paying regular income taxes on the converted balance.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/03\/trump-big-beautiful-bill-tax-changes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new tax cuts<\/a> could make Roth conversions more appealing for some investors, experts say. But incurring too much income could impact eligibility for certain tax breaks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/12\/required-minimum-distributions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What to do with RMDs when you don&#8217;t need the money<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/12\/cola-2026-social-security-cost-of-living-adjustment-estimate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Security COLA may be 2.7% in 2026: estimates<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/13\/older-student-loan-delinquencies-under-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Older student loan borrowers face high delinquency rates<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When weighing Roth conversions, you need to know the multi-year state and federal tax impact, said Judy Brown, a certified financial planner who works at SC&amp;H Group in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore area.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you&#8217;re\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/medicare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nearing Medicare<\/a>\u00a0age or already enrolled, boosting your earnings could increase income-related monthly adjustment amounts, or IRMAA, for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/benefits\/medicare\/medicare-premiums.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medicare Part B<\/a>\u00a0and Part D premiums.<\/p>\n<p>The strategy is &#8220;looking at a lot of different pieces, and figuring out the optimal place for each client,&#8221; said Brown, who is also a certified public accountant.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>&#8216;Fill up the lowest brackets&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Roth conversions have always been about &#8220;tax bracket management,&#8221; said CFP Patrick Huey, owner of Victory Independent Planning in Portland, Oregon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When making Roth conversions, advisors typically incur enough regular income to &#8220;fill up the lowest brackets,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Your federal brackets are based on each part of your &#8220;taxable income,&#8221; which you calculate by subtracting the greater of the standard or itemized deductions from your adjusted gross income.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline1\"\/>Trump&#8217;s temporary tax breaks<\/p>\n<p>Before Trump enacted the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, lower federal income tax brackets were scheduled to sunset after 2025, which would have made converted balances more expensive.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s legislation made the lower tax rates permanent, but several new tax breaks \u2014 deductions for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/07\/why-big-beautiful-bill-doesnt-end-taxes-on-social-security-benefits.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">older Americans<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/10\/trumps-no-tax-on-tips-worker-questions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tipped workers<\/a> and consumers with overtime pay and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/24\/how-to-get-full-big-beautiful-bill-car-loan-interest-tax-break.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">car loan interest<\/a> \u2014 are temporary with varying earnings limits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These tax breaks, which are available from 2025 through 2028, could offer more room for Roth conversions before hitting the next tax bracket, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>Once these cuts expire, you could be &#8220;paying more for the exact same Roth conversion,&#8221;
