{"id":345732,"date":"2025-08-15T05:23:18","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T05:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/345732\/"},"modified":"2025-08-15T05:23:18","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T05:23:18","slug":"your-view-standard-readers-overwhelmingly-back-south-birminghams-union-flag-and-st-george-cross-flag-flying-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/345732\/","title":{"rendered":"YOUR VIEW &#8211; Standard readers overwhelmingly back south Birmingham&#8217;s Union Flag and St George Cross flag-flying campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\tSTANDARD readers have overwhelmingly backed a campaign to fly Union Flags and St George Crosses throughout south Birmingham, with some even saying \u2018there needs to be more\u2019.<br \/>\nSince the story post relating to a community group\u2019s campaign going live this morning, our Bromsgrove Standard Facebook page has been inundated with almost 400 likes and more than 170 comments.<br \/>\nYour views<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Almost all of the comments have been positive towards the move after we asked for people\u2019s views.<\/p>\n<p>Bromsgrove comedian Fat Theo said: \u201cIt\u2019s National Pride \u2013 and about time too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis sort of patriotism in America and Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jayne Purcell added: \u201cAs you come off the motorway it brings a smile to your face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joanne Dervisoglu said: \u201cIt shouldn\u2019t even be a question. England Flags and Union Jacks should be up everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other posts, the flag-flyers were praised, some said there should be more flags everywhere and Donna Martin said: \u201cDrove through Weoley Castle and seeing all the flags lifted my spirits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Amy Grace said: \u201cBeautiful scenes \u2013 we need more\u201d, Elaine Hobbs added: \u201cWe need more in Rubery\u201d, and Richard Whitworth commented: \u201cI hope this catches on throughout the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others posted pictures of other areas of south Birmingham, including Bartley Green and Frankley.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>How did the flag-flying campaign come about<br \/>\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122728\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122728\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755235398_944_PHOTO-2025-08-13-15-38-10-380x285.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"285\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-122728\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Union Jack and St George\u2019s flags on lampposts on Ley Hill Road, Northfield, Birmingham. Photo by Tristan Harris. s<\/p>\n<p>The campaign has been spearheaded by Sean Doolan.<\/p>\n<p>He posted an image of himself and 14 other men holding the flags in the Weoley Castle Community Facebook group.<\/p>\n<p>He also shared a link to a GoFundMe page calling for donations for \u2018flags, poles and cable ties\u2019 which was launched by a group called Weoley Warriors.<\/p>\n<p>It led to a debate about whether the flying of the national flags on the Second City\u2019s streets should be seen as \u2018patriotic\u2019 or \u2018concerning\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>One person to book the campaign was Independent Frankley councillor Simon Morrall who claimed Birmingham City Council had already begun efforts to have the flags taken down.<\/p>\n<p>The local authority\u2019s policy is to remove any flag fixed to council-owned property, regardless of whats on them. It\u2019s understood the council has arranged a subcontractor to remove the flags in Weoley Castle.<\/p>\n<p>Birmingham City Council say upcoming street lighting upgrades mean anything attached to lampposts will need to be taken down.
