{"id":345895,"date":"2025-08-15T06:53:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T06:53:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/345895\/"},"modified":"2025-08-15T06:53:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T06:53:17","slug":"former-paisley-mp-willie-gallachers-death-marked-by-bookshop-display-tribute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/345895\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Paisley MP Willie Gallacher&#8217;s death marked by bookshop display tribute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Abbey Books in the town produced the showcase in memory of one of Paisley&#8217;s most famous politicians.<\/p>\n<p>23:52, 14 Aug 2025Updated 23:52, 14 Aug 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_DNP_PDE_070825abbeybooks_03JPG.jpg\" alt=\"Brian Hannan of Abbey Books in Paisley\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Brian Hannan of Abbey Books has paid tribute to the late Paisley MP Willie Gallacher(Image: Andrew Neil)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/paisley\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Paisley <\/a>bookshop has honoured the passing of one of Paisley\u2019s most famous MPs by creating a display.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Abbey Books, in Wellmeadow Street, marked the 60th anniversary of the death of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/authors\/paisley-daily-express\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Willie Gallacher<\/a> by designing a window display dedicated to the Buddie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Taking up room in the shop, the display on Thursday not only contained copies of the politician\u2019s own books but a whole raft of left-wing reads including works by Lenin and Stalin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Gallacher was believed to be the first <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/authors\/taylor-murray\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Paisley <\/a>author to be published by Penguin \u2013 a multi-national publishing company \u2013 with a book titled \u2018The Case for Communism\u2019, published in 1949.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The book was so well received, it became the first in a series produced by Gallacher. A second book, \u2018Rise Like Lions\u2019, was published by Lawrence and Wishart in 1951.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">And not only has Abbey Books got hold of copies of both books, they are both signed by Gallacher; a rare distinction at a time when book signing was far from the norm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Brian Hannan, manager of the Paisley book store, told the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/paisley\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Paisley Daily Express: <\/a>\u201cIt\u2019s something of an honour to even hold these books in my hand. He is one of the most famous figures to emerge from Paisley and a significant politician in his time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI realised no one else was remembering a man that was one of the most famous people to come out of Paisley. He was instrumental in pushing for the 40-hour week and wanted to improve the working life for people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cInitially, I was just going to put books in the window but I thought a bigger display was more fitting given the historical figure of the politician.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Born in Paisley on Christmas Day, 1881, he was the son of a baker. After his father died when he was seven, it was left to his washerwoman mother to keep the family together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In the 1920s, Gallacher became an influential figure when he became known a Scottish trade unionist, activist and communist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He was one of the leading figures of the shop stewards\u2019 movement in wartime Glasgow, as well as being a founding member of the Communist Party of Great Britain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In 1925, he was imprisoned for his political beliefs after being convicted under the Incitement to Mutiny Act 1797. He lived in a two-room council house in 68 Rowan Street and, famously, never had a phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Gallacher was regularly contacted via the nearest public telephone booth bearing the number THO 3255 \u2013 with calls said to have come from all over the world.
