The ship will make a day call at Liverpool Cruise Port on Friday, August 15 as part of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/gallery\/21-stunning-pictures-board-cunard-31735862\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">her Iceland and British Isles voyage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She will form a majestic backdrop to commemorative events taking place throughout the day at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Liverpool <\/a>waterfront. VJ Day on August 15, 1945 <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/king-charles-address-nation-historic-32222223\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"signalled the end of WWIILink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">signalled the end of WWII<\/a>, following Japan\u2019s surrender. For many men and women who had served in Asia, including prisoners of war and civilian internees, it brought a long-awaited return to peace after years of hardship and captivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Cunard\u2019s contribution to the war effort, planned at its headquarters in Cunard Building at Pier Head, was praised by then Prime Minister Winston Churchill and declared it shortened the war &#8220;by at least a year&#8221;. Several Cunard ships, including the largest (Queen Elizabeth) and fastest (Queen Mary) in the world, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/gallery\/21-stunning-pictures-board-cunard-31735862\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">were requisitioned and converted into troop transports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">These ships were instrumental in transporting large numbers of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/armed-forces\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Allied soldiersLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Allied soldiers<\/a>, with <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?safe=active&amp;rlz=1C1GCEA_enGB1013GB1017&amp;cs=0&amp;sca_esv=16656ab4fac410c3&amp;q=Queen+Mary&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjSiMXi0fOOAxVHTUEAHWDeFRkQxccNegQIBBAB&amp;mstk=AUtExfAmWH08RWV4DPMoyy1qv9n61mI_cisLv300ohjI_-qnlTWGI6y1YY1N0nJuYp5g0XRTQSdJ3QotV2OZ-fTWbmrmfmeATAYfLLyaofNvpo7bZCTspY2mZH1JssMLKVHIsRs&amp;csui=3\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Queen MaryLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Queen Mary<\/a> setting an unbeaten record for carrying 16,683 souls in a single voyage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">At the war\u2019s end, the Queens remained in service, making westbound transatlantic crossings to return home victorious troops (and their new brides) to North America, and eastbound crossings to bring home British prisoners of war held captive by Japan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">On Friday, a national two-minute silence will be held at 12pm to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day and at 12.02pm Queen Anne will lead all vessels on the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/river-mersey\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"River MerseyLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">River Mersey<\/a> in sounding their whistles to mark the end of the silence being observed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Captain Inger Thorhauge, Queen Anne\u2019s Master, will join Liverpool\u2019s Civic Commemoration Service and place a wreath at the Prisoners of War Memorial at the Pier Head.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Katie McAlister, president of Cunard, said: &#8220;It is an honour for Cunard to be part of commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of VJ Day at our spiritual home in Liverpool.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;We are immensely proud of our maritime heritage as well as our association with Liverpool and welcome the opportunity to help recognise the extraordinary service and sacrifice of those who gave so much.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/gallery\/17-stunning-pictures-cunards-queen-29884220\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Cunard\u2019s flagship Queen Mary 2Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Cunard\u2019s flagship Queen Mary 2<\/a> will participate in commemorations being held in her home port at Southampton on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Queen Anne\u2019s visit marks her third call at Liverpool, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/cunards-queen-anne-spectacular-proves-29289458\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"where she was named and dedicated to the city at a ceremony in 2024Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">where she was named and dedicated to the city at a ceremony in 2024<\/a>.
