{"id":346258,"date":"2025-08-15T10:11:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T10:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/346258\/"},"modified":"2025-08-15T10:11:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T10:11:10","slug":"luck-running-out-for-swiss-economy-as-growth-slows-ahead-of-us-tariff-hit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/346258\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Luck running out\u2019 for Swiss economy as growth slows ahead of US tariff hit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stay informed with free updates<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description o3-type-body-base\">Simply sign up to the European economy myFT Digest &#8212; delivered directly to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Switzerland\u2019s economy expanded 0.1 per cent in the second quarter, a sharp slowdown from the first three months of the year, when pharmaceutical companies accelerated exports in case US President Donald Trump hit the sector with tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>Friday\u2019s quarter-on-quarter GDP flash estimate for the April to June period was better than the 0.1 per cent contraction forecast by economists in a Bloomberg poll. <\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, it will add to the pressure on the Swiss central bank to potentially lower interest rates into negative territory to stimulate economic activity. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLuck is running out for the Swiss economy,\u201d Melanie Debono, an economist at advisory firm Pantheon Macroeconomics, wrote in a note to clients.<\/p>\n<p>The second half of the year \u201cwill be ugly\u201d, Debono warned, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/11315556-89e9-443b-b7a8-3c038f70374f\" data-trackable=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Switzerland<\/a> could plunge into a \u201cshort shallow recession\u201d following Trump\u2019s imposition earlier this month of a 39 per cent tariff on most Swiss goods \u2014 the highest level for any developed country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The \u201creciprocal\u201d duty level <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6804c076-4961-4373-a4f8-1e59ab5d7f8b\" data-trackable=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">came as a shock<\/a> to Switzerland, sparking criticism of the way Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter handled negotiations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Friday\u2019s flash estimate by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs did not come with many details. In its release, the Swiss statistical authority said a \u201cnegative performance in industry has been counterbalanced by gains in the services sector\u201d. It will release more detailed GDP data for the second quarter on August 28. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/stream\/e60ae25e-506c-48cd-8f4d-302cfd045d7a\" data-trackable=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swiss central bank<\/a> in June cut interest rates by a quarter point to zero. It is facing increasing pressure to cut rates below zero as the strong Swiss franc \u2014 which has surged this year amid trade tensions \u2014 has been weighing on the economy.\u00a0At 0.1 per cent, Swiss GDP growth in the second quarter was in line with the euro area. <\/p>\n<p class=\"n-content-recommended__title o3-type-body-highlight\">Recommended<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/5653fa35-67cd-4ead-9926-97d2ad4e762a\" data-trackable=\"image-link\" data-trackable-context-story-link=\"image-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"o-teaser__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/https:\/\/www.ft.com\/__origami\/service\/image\/v2\/images\/raw\/https%3A%2F%2Fd1e00ek4ebabms.cloudfront.net.jpeg\" alt=\"Argor-Heraeus gold refinery in Mendrisio, Switzerland\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Annual inflation in Switzerland has already fallen close to zero in recent months.
