After a week off the LPGA has returned for the Standard Portland Classic, an event that\u2019s been played on the tour since 1972, most of that time at Columbia Edgewater Country Club, the host again this year.<\/p>\n
The field is playing for a $2 million purse with the winner taking home $300,000 for a victory. Moriya Jutanugarn is the defending champion.<\/p>\n
The season still has been bizarre in that there hasn\u2019t been a repeat winner all year on tour, the longest stretch in history without that happening. Seven of the 21 different winners this year are in action in Portland, including Grace Kim and Angel Yin.<\/p>\n
There are seven past Portland champions competing including Jutanugarn, Stacy Lewis (2017), Brooke Henderson (2015, 2016) and Juli Inkster (1999). Yes, Inkster is playing on one of the tournaments that she said has always been one of her favourites. In 1999, she won by a whopping six shots.<\/p>\n
This year, she\u2019s using it as practice for the U.S. Senior Women\u2019s Open, played next week at San Diego Country Club.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe USGA Senior is really important to me,\u201d the 65-year-old World Golf Hall of Famer said. \u201cI would really like to win that or be competitive in that, so I\u2019m giving it my all this year to see what happens. So put myself out there, play this week, but I figured there is no better way to really prepare for a tournament than playing in a tournament.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, my expectations, I know I\u2019ll be hitting first most of the time, which is OK. Just try to put some solid rounds together and maybe see if I can shoot under par.\u201d<\/p>\n
