The system promises that the pension will rise each year by the highest of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/inflation\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">inflation<\/a>, average earnings growth, or 2.5 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">And with wage growth currently outpacing <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/inflation\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">inflation<\/a>, this is likely to set next year\u2019s increase. Figures from the Office for National Statistics show pay packets in the year to April\u2013June grew by 4.6%. The final figure that matters for the triple lock is for May-July &#8211; due next month &#8211; but experts say the outcome is already in sight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">At present, the full new <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/state-pension\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a> is \u00a3230.25 a week, or \u00a311,973 a year. Total pay is up 4.6 per cent in the year to April\u2013June, and it\u2019s the May-July figure that counts for the triple lock,\u201d explained Sarah Coles, head of personal finance at Hargreaves Lansdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cA rise of 4.0 to 4.5% means the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/state-pension\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a> would be between \u00a312,451 and \u00a312,512. This would bring it within touching distance of the personal allowance &#8211; so anyone with even a very modest personal pension income could end up paying income tax.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The standard personal allowance &#8211; the amount you can earn before paying income tax &#8211; is \u00a312,570. That means someone on the full state pension would only need an extra \u00a359 a year from other sources such as a private pension, savings, or rental income before paying basic-rate tax.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Senior-woman-using-a-laptop-computer-at-home.jpg\" alt=\"A beautiful multiracial senior woman\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The system promises that the pension will rise each year(Image: adamkaz via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Treasury will confirm the final rise in the autumn, with Parliament needing to approve it in March before it comes into effect in April 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe Bank of England expects inflation to ease in the coming months, so that by the time we get to the state pension rise in April next year, this increase might be well ahead of annual price rises at the time,\u201d Ms Coles continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cOf course, this is only part of the picture. Inflation has been particularly focused on household bills and food prices, which pensioners on lower incomes spend a larger proportion of their income on.
