We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 huxBsk\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>A sonic boom was heard over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/essex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Essex<\/a> after two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/raf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RAF<\/a> fighter jets scrambled to intercept a private jet that lost contact with air traffic control.<\/p>\n<p>Two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/typhoon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Typhoon<\/a> jets took off from RAF Coningsby, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/lincolnshire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lincolnshire<\/a>, to make the intercept of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/san-marino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Marino<\/a>-registered aircraft over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/cambridgeshire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cambridgeshire<\/a> on Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Residents of southern Essex, Cambridgeshire, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/suffolk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Suffolk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/kent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kent<\/a> and parts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a> reported hearing the loud bang at around 11.35am.<\/p>\n<p>Jenny Coxal, of Dartford, Essex, was at home when she heard a loud \u201cvacuum-style\u201d bang and thought someone had hit her garage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was someone hitting our garage, but when I went outside, all our neighbours were on the street, wondering what had happened,\u201d she told Kent Online.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/iStock-1432300761-(1).jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"An RAF spokesperson said the civilian aircraft was safely escorted to Stansted Airport after it lost contact with air traffic control\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>An RAF spokesperson said the civilian aircraft was safely escorted to Stansted Airport after it lost contact with air traffic control (Getty\/iStock)<\/p>\n<p>A sonic boom occurs when an aircraft travels faster than the speed of sound, generating shockwaves that rapidly compress and decompress the air.<\/p>\n<p>The speed of sound is about 660mph (1,060km\/h) at 60,000ft (18,300m) but can vary depending on altitude.<\/p>\n<p>One witness took to social media, saying: \u201cSonic boom just heard over Hornchurch. Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 went overhead,\u201d chimed another.<\/p>\n<p>Another person posted a picture of flight tracker, saying: \u201cEurofighter typhoon escorting a plane to Stansted. Causing the sonic boom all over Essex. People heard it as far as bexleyheath!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A woman in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk said it &#8220;rattled&#8221; her back door, while in north Kent one person commented that it &#8220;shook the whole house &#8211; we thought there had been an explosion&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In Burwell, Cambridgeshire, another woman wrote: \u201cThought something blew up in my loft\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>An RAF spokesperson said the civilian aircraft was safely escorted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/stansted-airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stansted Airport<\/a> after it lost contact with air traffic control.<\/p>\n<p>It said: \u201cWe can confirm that RAF Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) Typhoon fighter aircraft from RAF Coningsby were launched today to investigate a civilian aircraft which was not in contact with air traffic control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunications were re-established and the aircraft was safely escorted to Stansted. The Typhoons are returning to base.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An Essex Police spokesperson said: \u201cA flight has been escorted into Stansted Airport after it lost contact with the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContact was re-established with the plane, which had been travelling from Nice, and was escorted into the airport by RAF aircraft.
