Water has receded with wading birds, exposed shoreline and trees all visible.\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>BBC<\/p>\n<p>The dry banks of Chew Valley Lake, a key reservoir south of Bristol<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Households across the West of England are being urged to conserve water following the declaration of a &#8220;nationally significant incident&#8221; due to dry weather.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The areas served by Wessex Water, Bristol Water and Thames Water are among the regions of England considered by the government to be in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/dry-weather-and-drought-in-england-summary-reports\/dry-weather-and-drought-in-england-1-to-7-august-2025\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;prolonged dry weather&#8221; phase<\/a> \u2013 one level below a drought.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Wessex Water&#8217;s reservoirs are on average 57% full. Bristol Water&#8217;s four main reservoirs, including Chew Valley Lake, are only 46% full on average \u2013\u00a0the figure was 69% a year ago. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">All three companies are urging their customers to &#8220;use water wisely&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The National Drought Group, which comprises representatives from organisations including the Environment Agency, Met Office, water firms and regulators, made the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/national-drought-group-meets-to-address-nationally-significant-water-shortfall\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">declaration of a nationally significant water shortfall<\/a> after meeting on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Five regions in England, mainly in the North, have drought status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The National Drought Group&#8217;s chairwoman, Helen Wakeham, said it was calling on &#8220;everyone to play their part and help reduce the pressure on our water environment&#8221; following six months of below-average rainfall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Bristol Water said it did not have plans for a hosepipe ban but was monitoring the situation closely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Small actions \u2013 like taking shorter showers or using a watering can instead of a hose \u2013 can all add up,&#8221; a spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The company said it had been investing in major leakage reductions, which was &#8220;already having an impact&#8221;, and had given thousands of customers free water-saving devices.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755184337_952_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/8cbf10b0-7928-11f0-a6d9-0f824b553a33.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A green pond, with stony banks, surrounded by a raised grass verge.
