In this, the fourth part of the series, Shi Jiangtao looks at how the issue of Taiwan is overshadowing the relationship.<\/p>\n<p>As <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3319367\/2-big-guys-world-stage-china-and-europe-must-work-together-xi?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">mainland China and the European Union<\/a> mark 50 years of diplomatic ties, there is <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3319145\/can-china-get-us-out-way-better-ties-europe?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">growing concern<\/a> in Beijing that the bloc may be undermining its one-China policy, as Brussels \u2013 and some individual member states in particular \u2013 expand informal diplomatic relations with Taiwan.Historically viewed as a diplomatic formality, Taiwan has gained increasing prominence in Beijing\u2019s relations with the EU over the past decade.
