{"id":347744,"date":"2025-08-15T23:36:16","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T23:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/347744\/"},"modified":"2025-08-15T23:36:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T23:36:16","slug":"this-could-potentially-have-a-huge-impact-on-children-and-families-affected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/347744\/","title":{"rendered":"This could potentially have a huge impact on children and families affected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another Greater Manchester Labour MP has backed the M.E.N.&#8217;s campaign calling on Andy Burnham to implement a free bus pass for children in temporary accommodation<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_SEND-support.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>School children are missing out on vital education &#8211; but one thing can help them(Image: PA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Another Labour MP has backed the Manchester Evening News\u2019 campaign calling on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/andy-burnham\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy Burnham<\/a> to implement a free bus pass for children in temporary homeless accommodation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Families who are made homeless are often placed in temporary accommodation by councils, usually resulting in children moving from walking distance away from school to being miles away from the classroom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, council rules across Greater Manchester say children can only get free transport if they move more than two miles from home and there is no \u2018suitable school\u2019 nearer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It\u2019s near-impossible to be further than three miles from a school in the city, giving parents a difficult choice: Fork out for buses they previously didn\u2019t need to pay for, or move their children to a different school, if places are available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The M.E.N. believes this is a choice no homeless parent should have to make. It\u2019s why we\u2019re calling on Andy Burnham to implement a free bus pass for children placed in temporary homeless accommodation that is more than 30 minutes\u2019 walk from their school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Now, Christian Wakeford, MP for <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/bury\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bury<\/a> South, has publicly come out in support of the campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI\u2019m absolutely behind M.E.N.\u2019s campaign on this issue,\u201d he said. \u201cHaving dealt with many families who are placed in emergency accommodation, I know all too well how much of a negative impact such a move can sometimes have, especially on a child\u2019s upbringing, leaving friends, teachers and well-established relationships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cFacilitating that child to stay in their current place of education through a new bus pass is a small measure that could potentially have a huge impact on those children and families affected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_JRP_MEN_040724_election_043JPG.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Christian Wakeford won re-election in 2024(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Mr Wakeford, first elected in 2019 to represent Bury South as a Conservative joined <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/labour-party\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Labour<\/a> in early 2022. He is the second Labour MP from Greater Manchester to join the campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Rebecca Long-Bailey, MP for <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/salford\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Salford<\/a>, previously said: \u201c[Rules] are forcing parents to make impossible choices: pay for daily travel they can\u2019t afford, or uproot their child from school, friends, and support networks\u2014often for just a few weeks or months\u2014causing huge disruption to their education and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThese children need stability. They need access to their school, their teachers, their friends. A free bus pass is a small step that would make a big difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Three major not-for-profit organisations have also joined the cause, namely Shared Health, Wood Street Mission, and Resolve Poverty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Shared Health is pleased to support this campaign to give children in temporary accommodation free bus passes across Greater Manchester,\u201d said its chief exec, Dr Laura Neilson. \u201cIt is a simple change that can make a huge difference, and something we should have implemented a long time ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Previously a spokesperson for the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: \u201cEducation is the foundation that sets our young people up to fulfil their potential, and it\u2019s vital that we support them in those critical years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe are doing a lot to make travel easier and more affordable for everyone in Greater Manchester, including children and young adults.
