We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 huxBsk\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>Research suggests President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s new<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/travel\/news-and-advice\/us-visa-integrity-fee-tourists-visitors-trump-b2792747.html\"> $250 \u201cvisa integrity fee\u201d <\/a>could cost the United States $11 billion \u2014 a much larger figure than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/congressional-budget-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Congressional Budget Office<\/a> previously estimated, according to a report.<\/p>\n<p>The fee, packed in Trump\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-big-beautiful-bill-signing-oval-office-b2782990.html\">so-called \u201cBig, Beautiful Bill\u201d <\/a>that he signed into law last month, applies to all visitors traveling to the U.S. on a non-immigrant visa. The fee doesn\u2019t apply to countries on the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/us-visas\/tourism-visit\/visa-waiver-program.html\">Visa Waiver Program<\/a>, which includes most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/tourists-cancel-trips-trump-tariffs-b2716169.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Western European nations and some Asian countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By 2034, the \u201cvisa integrity fee\u201d would bring in more than<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/publication\/61570\"> $27 billion<\/a>, the Congressional Budget Office estimated. Said differently, the office is predicting the U.S. will rake in $2.7 billion from 11 million foreign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/travelers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travelers<\/a> paying the fee each year. <\/p>\n<p>While the language of the law makes the fee sound like a win for the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">economy<\/a>, it may actually become a major loss, as the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/americans-spending-less-summer-vacation-b2789747.html\">cost could deter visitors<\/a>. That loss could be as high as roughly $3.6 billion per year, or $11 billion in three years, according to a Tourism Economics analysis seen by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/suzannerowankelleher\/2025\/08\/15\/visa-integrity-fee-cost-us-11-billion\/?utm_source=fark&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_content=link&amp;ICID=ref_fark\">Forbes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A decline in travelers could lead to a dip in visitor spending and job losses in the tourism industry. At this rate, the U.S. is on track to lose $12.5 billion in international visitor spending this year, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a wake-up call for the U.S. government,\u201d the organization\u2019s CEO Julia Simpson warned in a statement. \u201cThe world\u2019s biggest Travel &amp; Tourism economy is heading in the wrong direction, not because of a lack of demand, but because of a failure to act. While other nations are rolling out the welcome mat, the U.S. government is putting up the \u2018closed\u2019 sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside of Canada and Mexico, the United Kingdom, India, Brazil, Japan, and Germany comprised the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.trade.gov\/i-94-arrivals-program\">top five countries<\/a> with citizens that visited the U.S. this year as of May 2025, according to the International Trade Administration.
