Sunderland are on the verge of signing Paris Saint-Germain <\/a>defender Nordi Mukiele, talkSPORT understands.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The French right-back spent last season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen<\/a> after failing to break into Luis Enrique\u2019s stellar squad.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His bid to earn a regular spot at Leverkusen was not completely fulfilled as he made just 15 Bundesliga<\/a> appearances over the course of the season.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He\u2019s expected to swap his home nation of France for the newly-promoted Premier League<\/a> outfit Sunderland<\/a> after emerging as a key target for Regis Le Bris.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The club are thought to have offered \u00a312m for their new defender, taking their summer spending up to nearly \u00a3150m.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mukiele, whose versatile skill set means he can be utilised as a right-back or a centre-back, would likely earn an immediate spot in the north east side.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His experience in both the Champions League and across Europe\u2019s premier divisions is set to bolster Sunderland\u2019s back line in preparation for their first season in England\u2019s top-flight since 2016\/17.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old joins a lengthy list of incomings who are primed to transform the former Championship side – with ex-Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka, Brighton star Simon Adringa and Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra all among those joining the ranks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They were also expected to make a move to bring back club legend Jordan Henderson before he put pen to paper on a deal with Brentford.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A move for Mukiele to Sunderland would also signify a quick reunion with former Leverkusen teammate Xhaka – who\u2019s already earned the captain’s armband despite not yet playing a match for the Black Cats.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mukiele\u2019s extensive career has seen him gain experience in both France and Germany, with his first big break coming at Montpellier.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He joined the French side in 2017, helping them to a tenth place Ligue 1 finish in just his second season.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since then he\u2019s lifted the German Cup with RB Leipzig and claimed two Ligue 1 titles with PSG.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mukiele made several appearances for France at youth level and has one cap to his name for Les Bleus’ senior team.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s yet to play in the Premier League and it remains to be seen whether he’ll feature in their season opener, which sees Sunderland face West Ham at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.<\/p>\n
