LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) – On Friday afternoon, folks gathered at London Community Center for a special called meeting.<\/p>\n
The meeting was called by London City Council to discuss the charges against Mayor Randall Weddle before an impeachment hearing set for September.<\/p>\n
The meeting did not last but a few minutes. It consisted of council members of council members sharing a resolution of the amended charges the council could use to impeach the sitting mayor.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat was the resolution,\u201d asked a citizen.<\/p>\n
\u201cI read it,\u201d Council Member Kelly Greene said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are voting on something we don\u2019t even know what it is,\u201d said another citizen. <\/p>\n
\u201cI read it,\u201d Greene repeated.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou said a resolution to KRS,\u201d the citizen said.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, I said, a resolution issuing amended charges of misconduct and setting a public hearing pursuant to KRS-83A.040,\u201d Greene said.<\/p>\n
When citizens asked for the resolution to be read aloud, Council Member Anthony Ortega said the document could be found online.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can just post it online,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, let them read it,\u201d said another person.<\/p>\n
\u201cTechnically, by KRS, you don\u2019t need to read a resolution,\u201d Ortega said. <\/p>\n
When the meeting was adjourned, citizens in attendance booed at the council.<\/p>\n
Katie Johnson attended the meeting on behalf of her family.<\/p>\n
She said it important for people to hold those in power accountable.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe city and the county can hold the council accountable without being on the mayors side,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to agree with the mayor. You don\u2019t have to vote for the mayor. You don\u2019t even have to like the mayor to want to hold your council accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Many people brought signs as they were allowed in this meeting, and a lot of them had a message to share.<\/p>\n
One message in particular centered around Doug Harless. He was shot and killed by a London Police Officer on December 23.<\/p>\n
Weddle faced significant criticism after the shooting.<\/p>\n
William Eversole said these city meetings take light away from a bigger issue.<\/p>\n
Eversole held a sign that said \u201cJustice for Doug Harless.\u201d He brought the sign to the meeting. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not only doing it for him, but for everybody. We all need justice for something,\u201d Eversole said. \u201cI think that seeing somebody get justice for a wrongful doing would kind of help us all.\u201d <\/p>\n
One citizen said he is confused by the council\u2019s actions. He added that London has had issues in the past.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s nothing but a witch hunt to me personally. I don\u2019t even understand how they keep on. \u2018Oh the mayor is doing this. Oh the mayor is doing that.\u2019 Well if you look at the history, we had problems here before this mayor even came around,\u201d said another citizen. <\/p>\n
Weddle posted to social media the public hearing regarding a possible impeachment is scheduled for at 9 a.m. on Sept. 5.<\/p>\n
