Trump, in a different post<\/a>, said he had had \u201ca wonderful talk\u201d with \u201cthe highly respected\u201d Belarusian ruler, Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Putin. \u201cOur conversation was a very good one. We discussed many topics, including President Putin\u2019s visit to Alaska.\u201d<\/p>\n

The high-stakes summit \u2014 the first in-person meeting between an American president and Putin since the latter launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 \u2014 is meant to lay the ground for a ceasefire. Zelenskyy and European leaders were not invited to the meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe key thing is that this meeting should open up a real path toward a just peace and a substantive discussion between leaders in a trilateral format \u2014 Ukraine, the United States, and the Russian side,\u201d Zelenskyy wrote in the social media post.<\/p>\n

The summit is scheduled to kick off around 11 a.m. local time (9 p.m. Central European Time) at the military facility in Anchorage.<\/p>\n

In the first part of the talks,\u00a0Trump, Putin and their translators<\/a> will convene privately. Then,\u00a0wider discussions will continue, with the Kremlin\u2019s delegation consisting of Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, Putin\u2019s adviser Yury Ushakov and special presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev, Russian state media reports<\/a>. Lavrov appeared to be wearing a sweater with the letters \u201cCCCP\u201d \u2014 Russian for USSR \u2014 upon his arrival in Alaska<\/a>.<\/p>\n
