If you’re on the lookout for a scenic village that’s just over an\u00a0hour away from Glasgow, this “beautiful” settlement at the head of Loch Long might be the place for you.<\/p>\n
Popular among\u00a0mountaineers, Arrochar\u00a0is “steeped in history” and was even a major target for the Vikings during the Middle Ages.<\/p>\n
The location is said to be “nestled amongst the high mountains of the\u00a0Arrochar Alps,”\u00a0which has been dubbed “some of the most beautiful scenery on the\u00a0Cowal Peninsula”.<\/p>\n
Why the ‘beautiful’ village of Arrochar is worth checking out<\/p>\n
The town was a key target for the Vikings during the Middle Ages (Image: Getty Images) Discussing the village<\/a>\u00a0near Glasgow<\/a> and its past in greater detail, the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park website<\/a> said it was first ruled by the barons of\u00a0Arrochar\u00a0and later by the chiefs of the MacFarlane Clan.<\/p>\n In later years, the clan became\u00a0cattle rustlers and would steal livestock from their neighbours in the middle of\u00a0the night.<\/p>\n This became such a frequent occurrence that the full moon became known as \u201cMacFarlane\u2019s lantern\u201d.<\/p>\n Arrochar also became a major target for Viking raiders who would drag their boats miles over land.<\/p>\n They would continue to attack the unprotected inland settlement until 1263, when they were defeated at the Battle of Largs<\/a>.<\/p>\n Arrochar is popular with mountaineers and hill walkers (Image: Getty Images) While the town is popular among\u00a0those looking to climb the likes of\u00a0Ben Ime and\u00a0Ben Arthur, there are also a number of nearby forest walks, according to Visit Scotland<\/a>.<\/p>\n For those looking to make a trip here, there are several\u00a0hotels in the area as well as bars and eateries like the Ben Arthur Bothy and\u00a0Arrochar Chippy.<\/p>\n Recommended Reading:<\/p>\n
