Vladimir Putin remains determined to \u201crevive the Soviet Union\u201d by \u201cdestroying democracy next door\u201d, Ukraine\u2019s ambassador to Australia has said in the wake of the Russian president\u2019s inconclusive meeting<\/a> with the US president, Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Putin and Trump met for nearly three hours in Alaska, emerging to tell reporters that \u201cgreat progress\u201d had been made on a deal to end Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine<\/a> but that there was no peace agreement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no deal until there\u2019s a deal,\u201d Trump said, saying he would brief Nato leaders and Ukraine\u2019s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on the meeting.<\/p>\n

Putin, through an interpreter, said while he agreed Ukraine\u2019s security should be guaranteed insisted the \u201croot causes\u201d of the conflict must be resolved.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the ABC in the wake of the meeting, Ukraine\u2019s ambassador to Australia Vasyl Myroshnychenko said the root cause of the conflict from Putin\u2019s perspective was a sovereign, independent and democratic Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Putin talks about the \u2018root cause of war\u2019, it\u2019s an independent Ukraine on the map of Europe. That\u2019s the only cause of war for Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe planned to take over Kyiv in several days, the entire Ukraine in several weeks \u2026 he is pursuing his ambition of destroying democracy next door.\u201d<\/p>\n

Putin had given no indication he was prepared to withdraw from his irredentist ambitions, Myroshnychenko said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPutin is just out there on his mission to revive the Soviet Union, to revive the Russian empire, and it can\u2019t be revived without Ukraine. Just overnight, as we speak, Russians have attacked many Ukrainian cities, sent many drones. So we don\u2019t really see any indication of him ending his war.\u201d<\/p>\n

Myroshnychenko said while it was a positive step that the meeting had taken place, a bilateral discussion \u2013 with only the US and Russia at the table \u2013 could not broker a sustainable peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe welcome America\u2019s involvement in this to make sure this war can end, but we understand it can\u2019t end without Ukraine involved, without Europe involved \u2026 we can\u2019t discuss the security of Europe without Europe at the table.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Anchorage, Alaska, Trump and Putin\u2019s planned one-on-one meeting was replaced by a three-on-three meeting<\/a> that also included US secretary of state Marco Rubio and Trump\u2019s envoy Steve Witkoff on the American side.<\/p>\n

Alongside Putin was Russia\u2019s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, and foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov, a former ambassador to the US.<\/p>\n

After the meeting, the two presidents addressed reporters but took no questions.<\/p>\n

The Russian president spoke first, urging both countries to \u201cturn the page\u201d on their fraught relationship and \u201cgo back to cooperation\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said he and Trump had worked out \u201can understanding\u201d but no final agreement and urged European leaders to \u201cnot throw a wrench in the works\u201d and to \u201cnot use backroom dealings\u201d to undermine the progress that had been made.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have every reason to believe that moving down this path we can come \u2013 and the sooner the better \u2013 to the end of the conflict in Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Putin also insisted that the \u201croot causes\u201d of the conflict must be resolved. Those \u201croot causes\u201d have previously included demands for Ukraine\u2019s formal renunciation of Nato membership as well as its \u201cdenazification\u201d \u2013 an ill-defined set of demands that include the removal of Zelenskyy as president.<\/p>\n

The US president, who spoke more briefly than Putin, described the meeting as \u201cextremely productive\u201d.<\/p>\n

Trump warned: \u201cThere\u2019s no deal until there\u2019s a deal. I will call up Nato \u2026 I\u2019ll, of course, call up [Ukraine\u2019s] president Zelenskyy and tell him about today\u2019s meeting. It\u2019s ultimately up to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The chair of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations, Kateryna Argyrou, said Putin went to Alaska with \u201cnothing to offer except more war\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo ceasefire, no retreat from his maximalist demands \u2026\u00a0even as discussions were taking place, Russian missiles and drones were raining down on Ukrainian cities and towns.\u201d<\/p>\n

Argyrou said Putin only wanted Ukraine\u2019s surrender, not peace. \u201cHis recycled propaganda about \u2018root causes\u2019 is simply code for denying Ukraine\u2019s right to exist as a sovereign, independent nation \u2013 a denial made real through the devastation Ukrainians face every day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere can be no lasting peace until Russia faces the truth: Ukraine is a sovereign nation.\u201d<\/p>\n
