One of the most memorable sequences in the new behind-the-scenes documentary \u201cThe Adventures in Making Superman\u201d is an emotional on-set discussion between writer-director James Gunn and lead actor David Corenswet while shooting Superman<\/a>\u2019s big speech at the end of the DCU movie. <\/p>\n

As pointed out by Variety,<\/a> Gunn posted this clip from the documentary \u2013 which is now available with Superman\u2019s digital release<\/a> \u2013 to his social media, saying he was \u201cfreaked out (and so happy) to find out it had been filmed.\u201d You can watch the impassioned exchange in the video embedded below.<\/p>\n

The nearly seven-minute long clip is a debate between Gunn and Corenswet that takes place in front of the whole crew and fellow cast members, including Lex Luthor actor Nicholas Hoult. It\u2019s a rare look at the creative process on the set of a blockbuster where the clock stops so the director and actor can come to an agreement.<\/p>\n

This was one of my favorite moments on the set of #Superman<\/a> and was freaked out (and so happy) to find out it had been filmed. <\/p>\n

The gist of the disagreement is about Gunn wanting a bigger, more passionate response from Corenswet after Luthor calls Superman a \u201cpiece of shit alien.\u201d Corenswet doesn\u2019t understand why this would still bother Superman so much considering his character had just had his emotional pep talk from Pa Kent that helps him come to terms with who he is. <\/p>\n

For his part, Corenswet later said this wasn\u2019t about him being difficult but rather, as someone with a theater background, needing to fully understand the text. \u201cI need it to make sense,\u201d Corenswet said in an interview included in the clip. \u201cI need to know what I\u2019m trying to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Corenswet makes his case by telling Gunn, \u201cIf I say, \u2019That\u2019s what it is to be human!\u2019 that feels like I\u2019m trying to prove it still, as opposed to, I really know it \u2026 I felt like shit about myself since the [Jor-El] recording<\/a> came out. It\u2019s just been like, \u2018I don\u2019t belong, I\u2019m shit, everything\u2019s a lie, I\u2019m not who I thought I was.\u2019 Is this not the moment where I go, \u2018I was wrong to feel that way?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Gunn finally persuades Corenswet, whose chest he pokes to emphasize his point, \u201cYour feelings about feeling bad are OK,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s not wrong for you to feel that way. \u2026 And in this moment, for you to talk about how it\u2019s OK to be vulnerable, you have to be vulnerable, which means showing Lex that your fucking feelings are hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

This proves to be a eureka moment for the actor who then rushes back to set to deliver Superman\u2019s speech the way Gunn envisioned it. Gunn, in a later interview, said that \u201cthere\u2019s no anger\u201d in the exchange and commended Corenswet for prodding him. Indeed, in his social post of the clip Gunn called it “one of my favorite moments on the set.”<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a reason why he\u2019s asking all these questions. Because it makes it better,\u201d Gunn said.<\/p>\n

The home release of Superman also includes a four-part series of animated short films<\/a> featuring the Man of Steel\u2019s canine sidekick Krypto<\/a>.<\/p>\n
