Labour’s \u201copen door immigration policy<\/a>\u201d is \u201cswallowing up London\u2019s housing supply\u201d, the Conservatives<\/a> have claimed. Tory analysis claims London will be \u201cleft with a shortfall of 207,900 homes by 2030\u201d in a best-case scenario.<\/p>\n

The average property<\/a> in the capital last month cost \u00a3539,914, compared with a national average of \u00a3298,237, according to the Halifax.<\/p>\n

The Conservatives<\/a> say \u201cimmigration<\/a> alone will require an average of 68,700 new homes in London every year\u201d.<\/p>\n

A study last year by Oxford University\u2019s Migration Observatory<\/a> reported \u201cLondon<\/a> has the largest proportion of migrants among UK regions, with over 40% of its residents born abroad\u201d.<\/p>\n

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said Labour had \u201cturned London\u2019s housing crisis into a housing catastrophe,\u201d adding: \u201cThe capital has become a pressure cooker, and it’s British families who are paying the price.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: \u201cThis is simply not true. The Mayor is working to overturn the previous Government\u2019s terrible legacy when it comes to housing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe truth is Sadiq has completed more new homes of all tenures than any time since the 1930s and started more new council homes than any time since the 1970s. The Mayor is taking the hard decisions to improve housing supply of all tenures for Londoners \u2013 including actively exploring releasing parts of London\u2019s green belt for development \u2013 as he continues to build a better London for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Labour party spokesperson accused the Conservatives<\/a> of trying to \u201cairbrush history\u201d, saying: \u201cThe Tories<\/a> have some brass neck. Their open borders experiment saw immigration hit record highs at nearly one million and Chris Philp completely failed to tackle the number of dangerous small boats crossing the Channel when he was immigration minister\u201d.<\/p>\n

He accused the Tories<\/a> of fuelling \u201cthe worst housing crisis in living memory \u2013 as they scrapped targets and torpedoed supply\u201d.<\/p>\n

But the Conservatives<\/a> said: \u201cThis is Labour\u2019s Britain. Build nothing, plan nothing, flood the system, and then act surprised when it buckles.<\/p>\n
