{"id":349754,"date":"2025-08-16T18:16:20","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T18:16:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/349754\/"},"modified":"2025-08-16T18:16:20","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T18:16:20","slug":"prince-harrys-charity-sentebale-lays-off-london-staff-amid-funding-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/349754\/","title":{"rendered":"Prince Harry\u2019s charity Sentebale lays off London staff amid \u2018funding crisis\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The charity founded by Prince Harry in honour of his mother has made all but one of its London staff redundant amid a funding crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Sentebale lost donations after a feud between the Duke of Sussex and Sophie Chandauka, its chairwoman, resulted in accusations of racism and misogyny, the mass resignation of the board and a damning Charity Commission report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Now The Times can reveal the HIV\/Aids charity has laid off four of its five London staff, including its global head of finance and compliance, on top of other redundancies in its African teams.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Prince Harry with Sentebale chairwoman Sophie Chandauka.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/\/3fd10e9f-e5e1-46e3-8a95-88683bed0072.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Duke of Sussex with Sophie Chandauka in April 2024<\/p>\n<p>YAROSLAV SABITOV\/PA<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">While the charity has claimed in public its donors remain \u201csteadfast\u201d, a redundancy letter from April seen by The Times reveals Sentebale telling staff it \u201cdoes not have\u201d donor funding and the charity is in \u201cretrenchment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">A recent fundraiser fell well short of expectations, with legacy donors citing the chairwoman\u2019s continuing involvement in the charity as their reason for withdrawing support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Last week, The Times reported that the Mamohato Children\u2019s Centre (MCC), in Lesotho \u2014 which once hosted more than 700 children per year at educational camps \u2014 had been \u201ceffectively mothballed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Staff there have been told to work from home to save money, and the charity is said to have run down much of the \u00a31.4 million built up over two decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/prince-harry-sentebale-charity-meghan-mhfzrqk3f\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Inside the crisis that \u2018bled dry\u2019 Prince Harry\u2019s Sentebale charity<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThe main thing we\u2019re all waiting for are the accounts,\u201d a source said. \u201cThere have been a lot of redundancies, there\u2019s been people who have been let go, a lot of churn and people have left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The redundancy round, which started in March, resulted in at least two dozen staff leaving the charity and its programmes, the charity confirmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">It said funders responsible for two thirds of its income had remained steadfast, and insisted any other difficulties with raising money were the result of the \u201cadverse media campaign\u201d launched by \u201cthe duke and the former trustees\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Problems began when the board challenged Chandauka over a \u00a3400,000 bill for consultants, which they said had brought little return. As the row deepened, she was asked to step down, but instead complained to the Charity Commission, alleging bullying, misogyny and racism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">In March, it came to a head, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/prince-harry-sentebale-tjvrsmtf8\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the trustees resigning en masse<\/a> blaming Chandauka\u2019s \u201calmost dictatorial\u201d style. Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, who co-founded the charity in 2006, also resigned as patrons, issuing a statement saying the situation was \u201cuntenable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Chandauka retaliated in a Sky News interview, in which she accused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/topic\/prince-harry\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the duke<\/a> of trying to \u201ceject\u201d her through \u201cbullying\u201d and \u201charassment\u201d, which he denies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Last week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/sophie-chandauka-sentebale-prince-harry-bullying-tb6v8d33s\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Charity Commission condemned both parties<\/a> for allowing the spat \u201cto play out publicly\u201d and said it had \u201cseverely impacted the charity\u2019s reputation and risked undermining public trust in charities more generally\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">It found no evidence there was a culture of bullying, harassment or misogyny, although it clarified it did not adjudicate on individual employment disputes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Sentebale has said it is considering its options to reopen this fight in another forum. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Former staff at Sentebale, across its bases in the UK, Botswana and Lesotho, appeared to remain loyal to the duke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">One said they believed Chandauka had \u201crun the organisation into the ground\u201d and that her initial request for a \u00a32,200 day rate as chairwoman \u2014 later withdrawn \u2014 had infuriated staff.
